I downloaded the latest firmware from Linksys and get the: "update are failed message." I also tried downloading tomatoe but nothing seems to be available. I'm way down south in Mexico and can't just pop into the local electronics superstore so I'd like to see what I can do with this router. I just got it and would like to get it up to date as is possible. Thanks for any help.

Ok, I've been looking around and found something "Toastman" wrote about the WRT54GS v4. He mentions the tomato nd-1.28.7625-Toastman-ND-STD. I found the 128 and downloaded how do I find the Toastman version? Where do I find more info about Toastman?

I also have a wrt160n that a friend gave me she's french so the utility menu is in french. She doesn't have the cd that came with it. Is there any way to change the language to english without the cd. Could I install tomato in English. I'd like to use both routers as back up routers. I'll just be using them to as part of my home network. Nothing complicated. Is there a particular version of tomato that anyone could recommend.
I have my computer directly connected to the router. My wife has her computer on the floor above me. She picks up a wifi signal from an antenna connected by cable to the router. Our house is made of cement block so she can't pick up a signal directly from the router. That is our set up. Both routers have out of date firmware and I'd like to get them functioning as well as possible. Thanks
Gutsman 7. I did find the downloads just takes me a while to learn the lingo and look up the initials.

Probably try a hard-reset, that should revert it back to english (and default settings)...

As for your WRT54GS v4... it has 4MB of FLASH so you should be able to get a decent firmware on there...

If you go to the DD-WRT Router Database and type in your router the page will tell you that to switch from the stock firmware you first need to download a "mini generic" firmware. Once you flash that you can upgrade to whatever version (that will fit in 4MB of flash) be it DD-WRT or Tomato.

With either firmware, you will probably have to stick to the 2.4 Kernel builds... (As opposed to the 2.6 Kernel Builds)

I'm having a problem downloading firmware from lynksis and dd-wrt. I download the firmware and then I can't open it. I keep getting the message that "The archive is either in unknown format or damaged."
