Is firmware besides Linksys secure?

I am not very computer oriented so I hope that noone is offended if I ask how secure it is to use firmware other than Linksys firmware for my WRT54G. I am not getting a good signal and I see that there are 2 other 3rd party firmwares available. I do not understand how to look at source code. I just want to increase the power from the router. Which firmware will be better to use if I just want to increase the signal?

    Thanks in advance,

the easiest is HyperWRT as there are very little modifications on the firmware.

Wifibox is another though allows yu to do a bit more on the WRT54G.

sveasoft has the most feature which for you i doubt you would use that much.

What firmware do you have at the moment?

I bought it with 2.02 and it would not work out of the box so I flashed it to 2.04 and got it to conect but the signal is not that great. I would like to up the power but I am slightly worried about the security using a 3rd party firmware from an individual. No offense intended to the people trying to improve on a product when the manufacturer won't but since the router is my firewall I don't know if I feel secure going with someones changed firmware.
