the router firewall is not enough. sure it protects the computers as ahwole but does not protect them induvidually. if you just go on the routers frewall and leave your network then you are screwed.

Software firewalls can allow you to set what programs can access the internet on one of the computers, because some programs use the same ports so the software firewall can give you control on a program by program basis.

I have the WRT54G v2 firewall enabled along with Zone Alarm Pro. Since my last ZAP upgrade of ZAP on April 29, I've had ZAP block 167 intrusions and only 1 of those was high-rated. So, I can tell you that the WRT firewall will let through some intrusions. However, I can also tell you that it blocks a whole lot of them at the same time, (which is good because the router blocks them before they reach your system). Before getting the WRT54G, ZAP use to block up to a few hundred intrusion attempts in one day if I was online long enough with dial-up. After getting cable, the number of intrusions went down to about 50 max/day, add wireless and I'm now down to maybe 1 or 2/day if any at all.

My opinion: Use them both! 8)

PS: I am sure that a good number of the 167 blocked intrusions since April 29 are from my system trying to establish IP addresses after flashing new WRT firmwares.

i think that most people are naive when it comes to security and think that the router firewall is enough. but that is just me.

The firewall is enough... as far as firewalls go. It is a the full blown firewall implementation from Linux.

However, firewalls are not all that is needed. It doesn't check your email for virus content, for example. Hence if on systems (spelled "MicroSoft") that need to be concerned with virus detection, that has to be added on a per host basis.

well this is not ture there are plenty of viruses for the mac too.

sure the frewall is a layer of protection but you should not rely on it as your first line of defense. and sure the firewall is serure as long as you add your own iptable rules.
