As the title explains, I wonder is there a gadget (windows sidebar.... or similar) or even application that can display Tomato status on the desktop?

On a Mac you can make a "widget" of any webpage (or a part of a webpage) to use in the Dashboard. Sorry, don't know about Windows.
Alternatively if talking about gadgets, there's an app for the iPhone that does it very nicely, see here.

If you're running any sort of SNMP daemon on Tomato, I'm sure there are also gadgets to do SNMP queries.

This would be very cool to have gadget that shows, let's say, router's cpu load etc.

I googled for about an hour and couldn't find any windows gadgets that would work with snmp. Rodney, have you ever seen such a gadget for windows?

In Linux I can use GKrellm and snmp plugin, but for Windows I couldn't find any gadget that would work with snmp at all.

There is also the Firefox Add-On called "Router Status" that is designed to work with various router firmwares including Tomato.
It hasn't been updated for a while and you might have to manually install and tweak it if using Firefox 3.6 (sorry I haven't actually used this add-on for a while). Screenshots here

Thank you! This is nice too. I've never heard of this addon before. Learning something new every day. And I guess this one doesn't use SNMP, right? If so, I'll get rid of snmpd that I've added though cifs.

Can't say 100%, but pretty sure it doesn't... If I remember correctly, you can also use it remotely (i.e. over the internet) so long as your router is setup for remote administration.

Ok, I've tried that plugin. It doesn't need SNMP. This will probably suffice for what I need it (seeing the cpu load and uptime).

P.S.: Still, if someone ever runs across windows sidebar gadget that works with snmp, please, let everyone here know.
