Is there a way to memtest a router?

I get a lot of these errors recently and I was wondering what was causing that...
I'm using the latest Toastman's firmware (tomato-ND-1.28.7634Toastman-IPT-ND-VLAN-SmallVPN) on a WRT54GL, QoS is disabled.

    Code:
    May 14 12:15:30 unknown user.notice kernel: __alloc_pages: 0-order allocation failed (gfp=0x1d2/0)
    May 14 12:15:30 unknown user.notice kernel: __alloc_pages: 0-order allocation failed (gfp=0x1d2/0)
    May 14 12:15:30 unknown user.notice kernel: __alloc_pages: 0-order allocation failed (gfp=0x1d2/0)
    May 14 12:15:30 unknown user.notice kernel: __alloc_pages: 0-order allocation failed (gfp=0x1d2/0)
    May 14 12:15:30 unknown user.notice kernel: __alloc_pages: 0-order allocation failed (gfp=0xf0/0)
    May 14 12:15:30 unknown user.notice kernel: __alloc_pages: 0-order allocation failed (gfp=0x1d2/0)
    May 14 12:15:30 unknown user.notice kernel: __alloc_pages: 0-order allocation failed (gfp=0x1d2/0)
May 14 12:15:30 unknown user.notice kernel: VM: killing process dnsmasq

When I check the free memory, I still have 20% left or more if I reboot, the cpu load is low (> 0.10).
I try to clean my nvram just in case it was something like that, but it's still happening.

    edit:
well, I may have found some answer here.
It seems the default number of connections is too high for a WRT54GL (8192), I reduced it to 2048.

well, it's still happening, even with 1024 max connections :-/
    any ideas?

Sounds like you run out of memory to me, there's even that line that states that dnsmasq was killed. By the time you ran "free", the router probably already had freed some RAM.

is there a way to fix this?

Run a less complicated firmware that requires less RAM?

That router has a pretty small amount of RAM. Running VPN on it might be pushing things a bit.

Also, IPTraffic can take a certain amount of RAM, especially if you have many devices on your network.

I hate to give answers not completely related to Tomato itself but if you are very set on using that router there is a hardware mod for adding memory, but you need good soldering skills and to find a compatible memory stick from where to de-solder from

otherwise, as already mentioned I agree it sounds like too little memory
