what version is the kernel on a WRT54G v1 and is it possible to update it to lets say 2.6.7?

Some old firmwares used 2.4.5. Current firmwares (linksys and third party) use (locally modified) versions of the broadcom 2.4.20 port for the bcm947xx boards.

I have (unreleased) working ports of both 2.4.26 and 2.6.7. The last missing piece was modifying the wireless driver to work with 2.6.7, which I finished this weekend. This work was done in hopes of generating donations to a non-profit organization, and I'm still working out the details. I should have more information by the end of the week.

On a related note, I believe all firmwares but OpenWRT are still using a version of uClibc (some mid 0.9.19-0.9.20 cvs checkout), which is approximately a year old. We have fixed a _lot_ of bugs since then. While there are complications (different versions of uClibc are not necessarily binary compatible) involving a couple of binary-only apps, those can be worked around.
