I have noticed that when I access another machine on my lan, using a defined name registered in DHCP, with a mapped MAC address, ie foo.local, it appears to initiate a WAN connection.

Subsequent connections do not appear to do this, neither does a ping.

I have the domain name , local set up in Identification (no leading '.'), allow multicast checked and the following also checked

    Use Internal Caching DNS Forwarder
Use Received DNS With Static DNS
    Intercept DNS Port (UDP 53)

Anyone got any ideas on this?
