LAN transfers make Internet/WAN unresponsive

Has anyone had an issue with file transfers on the LAN making the WAN/Internet access spotty or nil?

If I run a nice, big file transfer from my computer to the one in the living room, the web/internet access for all computers in the house becomes so slow it's practically nonexistent.

Router is a WRT54Gv2 with the latest Tomato. The transfer is from a wired client to a wireless client.

At first I thought that the router was getting swamped by shuffling data from the wireless to the LAN switch. So, I shut off wireless, and plugged my WRT54Gv6 (with ddwrt because Tomato micro is nonexistent ;) ) into the LAN to handle wireless AP duties. This strategy yielded no joy. The same behavior persists.

Still, WAN access is horrible for all clients (including my wife's wired computer that's not involved in the transfer whatsoever) when there's a file transfer going.

It seems wrong to me that a wireless G LAN transfer could be saturating our 100 mbit wired LAN. But perhaps I'm a fool?

Does anyone have any advice here?

    Problem sorted!

Our internet commection is itself wireless. Looks like it was a channel conflict!

mh, your traffic gos along a switch so other traffic should not be affected.
