    Hi all,

I'm pretty new to the third party firmware scene.

Just got a E4200, was hoping to install a Tomato firmware on it.

    My questions

    1. Which firmware ?
    - I think i saw mention of tomato usb and Victek supporting it so far. But i'm unsure which firmware file exactly. Also i do understand that 5ghz currently isn't support, which i am fine with. Can someone kindly point me to the latest firmware i should use for it ?

    2. How to install the tomato firmware from the linksys default ?
    - Any instructions how to install the tomato firmware ? for the E4200.

Teddybear's tomato usb has a beta build but i couldn't find it. Also he seems to be Mia for a while now. Only Victek and toastman i've seen have been actively working on firmware for E4200.

Anyway some help would be appreciated

You can try Toastman's build 1.28.7475.4 http://www.4shared.com/dir/v1BuINP3/Toastman_Builds.html#dir=0 just make sure you select the file which explicitly say E4200 in the file name like tomato-E4200USB-NVRAM60K-1.28.7475.4MIPSR2-Toastma n-RT-Ext.bin

CAUTION: You should enable DHCP immediately in Toastman's latest builds to save you some IP assignment troubles...

Installing Tomato firmware from Linksys' stock firmware is a breeze.

    1. Reset your router to it's original settings.
    2. From the Linksys' WEBGUI select upgrade and load the tomato-E4200USB-NVRAM60K-1.28.7475.4MIPSR2-Toastma n-RT-Ext.bin.

    3. The update will take around 3 minutes --- just wait and let your router reboot and wait until the power LED has stopped blinking.

    4. Now go to Administration Tab

    5. Select Configuration. Under restore default configuration, select ALL DATA in NVRAM (thorough). click ok and wait for a couple more minutes.

    6. Your E4200 is now running Tomato. Final step is to enable DHCP in BASIC TAB. Click Save.

    7. Now you can tinker with your Tomato router settings...

I am using RAF 9006 but it doesn't have WiFi 5Ghz now that I double checked, it's the first thing I disable anyway, the Boxee Box doesn't support 5Ghz.

I would wait for 5GHz support personally. By then I think the firmware will be more mature. But if you really must have it. I would go with Victek's. Keep in mind. You also lose guest network support when using Tomato if you like that feature or use it.

    byeant

    thx guys for the info.

actually i posted back a while ago on my blog and here i found 2 firmwares currently supporting the Linksys E4200

    http://mognet.no-ip.info/2011/06/876

As mentioned on my blog, i installed Victek's because it had a firmware specifically for my router, whereas Toastman i saw was a general build (although the notes do indicate the newest firmwares would work on the E4200)

Anyways seemed Victek's was a few days more recent so i went with that.

So far everything seems stable as far as i can tell.

My wireless client devices i don't think they can receive 5ghz so i don't think it matters much to me. I do understand that DD-WRT has 5ghz support for the Linksys E4200, but honestly i much prefer Tomato's clean look and excellent bandwidth monitoring/QOS features.

I've had TomatoUSB and currently latest Toastman's Mod running on my E 4200 for about 2 months with no problems other than the 5 GHz not working --- will have to wait for Teddy to incorporate this into TomatoUSB. Before that I had DD-WRT but it proved to be too unstable ... will have to wait for more stable versions to appear though 5 GHz is working somewhat.

Edit: After using more recent Toastman versions (versions greater than v1.28.7471), I've gone back to using Tomato Firmware v1.28.7471 MIPSR2-Toastman-RT K26 USB VPN. For me it's the most responsive with web browsing and contains the functionality I need from Toastman (QOS changes).

    Thx pharma for your input.

For my own experiences, i am currently using

Everything seems stable, but i have trouble getting the CIFS client to mount my shared folder on my QNAP to help store the bandwidth monitoring logs from the E4200 Linksys router onto the QNAP.

    I'm thinking i will switch to toastman version that you suggested if i can't find a solution soon :{

PS: can tomato saved settings be imported from Victek RAF to Toastman's firmware ? Or is it not compatible ?

Initially I had problems setting up CIFS, but turned out to be Windows permission issues on folders. You'll just have to work through it ... took me about 2 days to get it straight.

    i checked permission rights its 777 for admin. So not sure why it isn't working :{

    @ toast

so where can i get help for the cifs issue :{ ?

    Yes, I'm using windows OS.

Any cifs issues you are having would be the same for any Tomato firmware, and the solution would also be the same. Did you try a forum search or google search? "Tomato CIFS LINUX qnap" seems to return hits.

    Good luck.

Nothing yet, I think I am going to downgrade my router back to the E3000. I don't use 5Ghz right now but I want to be able to enable it just in case (test etc.) ...then get the E4200 again when it will be fully compatible.

    Hi,

Since my update to Tomato RAF 1.28.9006 on my E4200 I'm having a lot of difficulty surfing the web.
For exemple if I try to search for something on amazon.com I have the following error: Erreur 101 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_RESET) : La connexion a été réinitialisée.
Same thing on a lot of websites...
Does anyone have a clue ?
