i'm having the craiziest problems on my wireless router..i bought my router about 6 months ago for my X-box..sold my xbox, bought a new Vista pc..put my old pc in my kids room, then i went out and bought a wireless G card..it's a MCI brand..installed my G card in my kids room, and wireless internet,

that is untill the next morning..the computer was not touched all night long..my kid was out of town, so the next morning i go and check it..and theres no connection..it's picking up a 85% signal, but it keeps saying the link is down..and when i push the connect button..it never connects to any thing..i can and will give more info just ask...i have a firewall on both pc's, and i am on DSL service..i use Norton firewalls, other than that, nothing special..

    please help..
    thanks..

I know there have been issues with vista and certain cards. If the vista machine getting an IP from the router or does it show the default address (169.254)?

i have the router connected to the Vista machine..the computer in my kids room is a xp system, the xp system has the G card..my ip is
    69.40.104.**

what i don't understand is how it worked 1 night..and now it picks up the router, has a good signal, but soon as i click connect, it switches back to disconnect and says the link is down..i've uninstalled it and reinstalled, still nothing..is thier any settings that might have changed that would keep it from connecting, ...? or could the problem be with my pc with the router..?? i've unplugged and plugged it back in also, no luck

Does not appear that you are connected to the router, well let me rephrase that it appears that the router is in bridge mode. The ip that you show is a routable internet facing ip. You should see something along the line of 192.168 or 172.16 or 10.0. Are you hard wired anywhere or just wireless? I would guess wired to the modem at the moment, in order to get wireless to work you will need to make sure the ssid is correct and encryption matches on both sides.

No need, personally i had the setup disk, its a waste of time and space. So what are you trying to do exactly, get wireless working? You say the internet is up so that is good no? I am just about to walk out the door from work, by the time you read this i will be on my way out, if no one answers this in the next couple of hours send me a PM and ill get back to it (about 3 hours from now).

No worries, log into the router from one of the working computers and check to see what the wireless settings are, i.e.: if encryption is on, what the passphrase/key is etc.

thats the problem, i can't log in to my router..i've rebooted the router, and tried the default password, no luck, its just a repeating screen that keeps asking for my password..but if the pc with the wireless G card is picking up the router signal, but will not connect, i guess they could be some kind of problem with my router, and not the pc in my kids room with the wireless card..??

Dont give up, there is a reset button on the back, push the button in and hold it will watching all the lights on the front. It will start a reboot cycle at about 30 seconds, the lights will change, sometimes they all go on then blink off, but you will see a change. Release the button and let it reboot, you should then beable to log in with the default username and password. You can then set it up the way you want. If you have any questions just ask.
