I decided to go to walmart yesterday, Ill leave the long version of the story to the birds, and get right to the meat of this post.

On the shelf at the super walmart in Raleigh, NC on the east side of the loop on I64, there were 4 identical WRT54GS routers. I did not know what I know now about them, but a friend had been talking them up for some time, so I got one in lieu of building my own router out of miniature pc components.

the serial of the one I got began with the digits CGN3 which everywhere I read tells me is a version 2.0 with 32MB ram and 8MB flash rom.
there were 3 left after I picked mine up. the firmware version on it right now is 3.37.7 which means it must have the linux based firmware. By what I read this is the best of all of them, ram size cpu and everything. If you live in Raleigh, I suggest you grab one. If I had the money I would go back and purchase the rest right now, but I am broke now

Well, I didn't like a few "not there" features of the linksys software, so now Im running DD-WRT latest version with VoIP.
I am just floored by what it can do, ive not seen this friendly, intuitive, and configureable of a firmware ever. the only thing that ever came close was a cisco router.
I have a catalyst 1900 hooked to it, running CatOS, now I wish I could upgrade it to a better firmware. I am just floored by this DD-WRT. I had thought I would miss my old trusty DI-614+ I had been (over)using and abusing for the past three plus years, but it's never going back to routing again and I hope nothing happens to this router as it is just flat out incredible with this new firmware.

I personally prefer FreeBSD for my computer OS but this will have penguin on it instead of a deamon. The penguin truly does have a place in my home, I never thought it would happen. to the maker of DD-WRT, you did an incredible job.
