Load balancing kludge - feasibility/performance

I'm still experiencing random unrecoverable WDS failures (i.e. slave reboot doesn't reconnect) using the setup in my sig file. On the advice of several gurus here, I reverted back to 7483.2 for stability, and the number of failures dropped significantly, however there are still enough to be an issue. Back when the main router was a WRT54GL running vanilla Tomato 1.28, there were no such issues, but traffic was much lighter and I didn't need QoS.

So...I'm considering inserting the old Tomato 1.28 WRT54GL behind the RT-N16 (connected via cat5) to handle WDS only, and letting the RT-N16 take care of QoS and DHCP.

Has anyone tried this, or anything similar? I admit it's a bit of a kludge...is it even feasible? Any thoughts as to the performance implications?

Thanks as always to Toastman et al for their outstanding work.
