I'm not sure where to put this thread so I guess General Discussion is my best bet. Anyway...

I need help finding a router. I don't want anything fancy. I just want something cheap, with 5 ports, and the ability to open ports without having the router reset.

When I go to open ports in my current router, it resets and knocks me offline for a few seconds.

you mean when you edit the configuration and save settings it resets, or reboots?

Yes, the router resets. And sometimes it even changes the port my computer is using, which can be very annoying.

For example, let's say I open a port on my computer for 101. When the router resets, it sometimes changes my computer to 102, or 103, or whatever. Then I have to go back and change the settings again. Thank god that only happens sometimes though.

Does anyone have any ideas of routers I could get though?

most routers on some certain configuration changes will pause, stop transmittiions, and sometimes they do reboot.

I dont know of any Linksys router that has 5 ports as the norm. they usually have either 4 ports or 8 ports (not inc the WAN/Internet port)

the BEFSR81 comes to mind if you need a cheap router with 5 or more ports.

Well I figure I could get a 4 port and a hub. But do you know of any routers that don't reset?

The "resetting" issue is due to unstable firmware. If the firmware is compiled properly, resetting shouldn't be an issue.

The firmware is up to date, but I don't think it has anything to do with the firmware. The router even has a screen for when it resets. Something along the lines of "please wait 5 seconds while the changes are made."...or something like that.
