Low signal strength wrt54g v7

My old WRT54G v1.1 died earlier this week, so I bought a new one, apparently a v7. Since then the signal strength has weakened considerably. I have a 7dBi external D-Link antenna attached to the left antenna port (seen from the back).

Is there any way to boost the signal strength on a WRT54G v7?

Whoa, you have a v7 ? I think this unit is based on the Atheros chipset.. Can you post some internal pictures ? As for signal strength, well, we can expect all sort of problems from a brand new model...

I also have the v7 after turning my v2.2 into a brick a couple of weeks back. The v7 is not putting out the same signal strength as my v2.2 did :( (sob) My v2.2 put out an excellent signal even when I'm on the patio and the v2.2 was behind a couple of concrete walls. Now, I can barely receive a signal when I go out of the room where the v7 is. Cheaper internal parts on the newer versions of this legendary router me thinks. What did Linksys do to the WRT54G?! It's model suicide I tell you. I used to be a Linksys fan but now, I'm leaning towards buying a D-Link DI-634M in a couple of days.

Can't you just fix the Bricked 2.2
