Low speeds

I've had my Linksys WRT54G with tomato firmware for more than 5 years now. Its been working perfectly fine in every way till now.

For the last 3 days, out of nowhere, the speeds start dropping below 1Mbps. I have 15/5 Mbps on comcast. The speeds directly from the modem come out 15/5, but when I connect through the router wifi its slow again.

    Here's where it gets weird:

A wired connection from the router to my laptop gives me 15/5, but a wired connection from the router to (powerline to) VOIP device is crappy to the point that it becomes unusable.

I removed both antenna from the Linksys and the wifi speed is boosted nearby but becomes nonexistent upstairs (obviously). But for some reason it also makes the VOIP device work normal again, even though that has nothing to do with the wireless.

When screwing the antenna back on, within the first minute or so the speed will be 15/5, but then drop down again to 2/2, 1/1, etc.

I've tried increasing/decreasing antenna power, and that didnt work. Tried just using one antenna, that didnt work.

The only guess I have is, I saw a new wifi network with a strong signal nearby, and that may be interfering, but I dont even know if it started the same time my router went down.

I'm about to upgrade to the new tomato firmware, but I wanted some ideas/suggestions other than reinstall everything.
