Major Outlook send problems after a few days of use

Had Thiborc15 installed a few days ago and all was well. Then all of a sudden this morning, Outlook would not send email. The only thing that I changed since last night was setting Bittorent to "low". Did some reading and even tried setting MTU manually after a ping / % loss test. Still not sending. Also see lots of CRC errors (receive) and Frames retried (transmit) on the wirless adapter diagnostic. Not sure if this is related.

Finally, I had to flash back to default linksys firmware and outlook is sending email again. I would love to continue ot use Thibor15c aagin. Can anyone help or share some insight as to why this might happen. It will at least give me some things to test if I decide to upgrade again.

    Thanks in advance.

are you totally sure it was not just your ISPs mail server plating up?

by the time you refllashed the router, the mail server could have been back up again?

how do you know exactly that it was definately Thibor15c firmware and not the SMTP serverat your ISP?

i use outlook and 15c and haven't had this problem

ANYONE else have this problem or NOT?

I can't say for sure it was due to Thibor15c. If that came acorss, my apologies first.

I installed 15c on my WRT54GL a few days ago and it has been great. Stable and working. Then late last night I Chose Bittorrent and made it Low priority. This morning, Outlook would not send email. Not thorugh my ISP or thorugh my web host (tried both SMTP's). Did some reading on MTU settings and tried this: http://www.dslreports.com/faq/5975

No email being sent. I should have cold booted the router to try first but urgent emails needed to go out. Flashed with latest firmware from Linksys, reset to default settings, rebooted router, resetup wireless, emails are going out again.

Any ideas as to what might have caused this?

there are many factors including the router that "could of been" the cause of this. you could try going back to 15c and see if it happens again, however this is the first occurance i know of that 15c is being blamed for blocking SMTP.

for the record, i've never seen a report of the firmware blocking smtp, unless it was desired. Perhaps it was just a coincidence

Thanks Thibor. The router "died" again. I checked in with Linksys tech support for quite some time and we could not replicte the problem after a reboot of the router. Rebooting seems to cure things but I will keep an eye out. Jus treinstalled 15c back on. Let me do more testing and report back. If this keeps happeneing, it could be a defective router. They really don't make then like they used to.

Reporting back. After 1.5 days of running Thibor 15c again, I am no longer able to send email out via outlook anymore. I won't reboot the router yet. If anyone has tests or things I should try to diagnose the problem, that would greatly be appreciated. I will call linksys and give them a try as well.

Is it just smtp that be being "blocked"? You can see everything else on the Internet OK?

Is it possible that the DNS entry for your email server is somehow expiring? To check this, try doing a "ping" of your email server. If it returns, try using the IP address rather than the name in the email configuration.

ok, did some more testing and here is what I found. The Outlook blockage only applies to my ISP's smtp. If I use my web host smtp, the mail goes out. SO how do I find out what to replace in my smtp for my isp? Will keep testing and report back. If anyone has more ideas, please let me know.

Back. Just got on the phone with my cable company who is my ISP. They gave me a different smtp to try and the email goes out fine now. SO... my question. Does anyone have any insight as to why the router does not like my ISP's default smtp? Never had this problem with the older Linksys B router. Only had this issue with the WRT54GL. Is this a router hardware issue or do I need to configure something in Thibor15c? Pretty new at this and anyone with thoughts would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I have the exact opposite problem since upgrading.
My webhost email wont send on my pc at all(wireless) and will only send after multiple tries on wifes pc(wired) but isp mail sends fine. I have had several friends try sending email from webhost and it works fine for them.
no biggie for me though since I dont use webhost mail much. if thats my only drawback to this firmware im happy!!

Thanks for the reply Dawggy. Glad I am not the only one with smtp issues. Hey, which model and version do you have? I have the WRT54GL V1.0.

Thanks for the reply dawggy. Looks like we might have the same router but stamped with a different name. I am surpised no one else reported this issue. Maybe Thibor is right. It's probably just a coincidence?

are you sure your ISP hads not change the SMTP mail server settings or it uses a different port that the standard 25 port?

Also make sure the SMTP server is your ISP's SMTP server and not another smtp server you happen to have an account for. sometimes you cna only sent using the ISP smtp server, and not any smtp server.

    what ISP are you using?

Hey Toxic, thanks for the helping hand. I am not 100% sure if my ISP changed smtp mail server settings but I do know that when I run the latest Linksys firmware, my default ISP smtp mail goes out. When I run Thibor15c, it does not. I have to use my web mail smtp or a special smtp provided my my ISP.

can you confirm that when you upgrade to Thibor15c you do a hard reset?

Just to be clear, I do this after I upgraded to Thibor 15c. I use the function in the firmware that Restore to default plus clers nvram. After the router reboots, I do a hard reset like so (hold reset button for 30 sec, pull power plug, let go of reset button, plug in power). When the router boots, my SSID is changed back to the default so I assume it worked?

hold the reset button for 30 secs, pull power, DON'T let go of reset and keep power off for 10 secs, plug power in and after 30 secs let go of reset button

    Hey Thibor,

Although those were different instructions than what Linksys tech support had provided, I will try that as well. Thanks.

Hey Thibor, maybe you could help us "fishermen" to understand this, in the spirit of it is more efficient to teach someone how to fish than to give him one fish! :)

NVRAM requires power to retain settings?
Therefore whenever power is turned off, the NVRAM settings must be shadowed in Flash in order for these values to find their way back to NVRAM when power is turned on?

    Is this the correct picture?
Keep up your good work. Thanks.

the nvram does not require power to retain settings. cmos requires power to store settings(as in PC BIOS), this is FLASH memory and is not cleared simply by removing power. you can fish now?

    Me bad.
NVRAM is just part of flash.
So all this NVRAM "clear" and "restore factory defaults" stuff is to be understood as invoking a program which can write to the requisite flash memory locations.

What is written to these locations is stored is some other area of flash memory.

The "factory defaults" are just some area of flash that do NOT change once firmware, like 15c, is installed. Or maybe there is some area of flash memory that 15c respects and preserves, so "factory defaults" is whatever was there when 15c was installed, i.e. flashed.

The "clear NVRAM' just invokes a program to write zeroes to NVRAM, or maybe initializes its data structure so that firmware, like 15c, knows which locations in flash memory are available for writing to.

    Thibor, am I fishing yet?
Be kind, like you, I am not being paid to post here.
    :)

Hey thanks for the instructions. I finally had some downtime to test this out. Flashed with Thibor15c and did as you instructed. SMTP is working again!!!! but... after a few hours of runtime, smtp dies from ISP. Switched it to web host SMTP, it works again. Thought it could be the ISP's mail server. Logged in to ISP webmail, mail goes out. Called tech support, all seems well on teh ISP side. Flash back to linksys firmware, ISP smtp works again. Hope this can help others in the future.
