I'm using the built-in minidlna to serve video and it works great. The one exception is that when new media is added to the media folder, my media devices do not become aware of it until I force a rescan.

Some googling seems to indicate that the line "inotify=yes" in /etc/minidlna.conf should have the media database updating automatically when changes are made, but it does not appear to work this way. This link: http://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,1931,1931 seems to suggest that kernel support is required. "lsmod | grep inotify" returns a blank, so I'm really not sure where to go from there. Any ideas?

There is several issues related to inotify in minidlna 1.0.24. For example, minidlna will not add files\folder with "[ ]" brackets until restart.
The kernel already includes inotify_* syscalls, so no any kernel modules needed. If you not sure it's working, check inotify with inotify-tools/incron packages.
