I have a WRT54G (v2.2 model with v4.20 firmware from linksys) that I use for a wired and wireless connection in my home. My friend has been using my connection via wireless next door, but has recently ran into low signal strenghts...

..so I sent him to the store to pick up another WRT54G (v4.0 model with original firmware). I understand I can use the second to enhance the signal, but I'm having problems setting it up. I've read the forums but still cant figure it out. I know this has been posted before, but for a complete n00b, can someone please take me step by step through this? I keep reading about WDS but I don't see anything in my wireless settings about this. What do I need to do?

the linksys firmware doesnt support that. you need to flash both with 3rd party firmwares. try a sveasoft firmware.

I tried flashing with Alchemy and HyperWRT 2.0, both ended up getting a "Upgrade are failed" msg during flash. I heard v2.0 WRT54G's and above won't accept 3rd party firmware. At this point...what do I do?

You could try DD-WRT Ver. 23 beta.

In the hwsupport.txt that comes with the download, it says that it has been tested with WRT54G up to version 5.0, and up to 4.0 for WRT54GS.
