N66R won't leave CFE mode

    I have a new N66R.

I installed the recover utility, put it into recover mode and tried to upload tomato-RT-N66U_RT-AC6x--116-AIO-64K from Shibby. The file uploaded fine, and waited 5-10 minutes. The router never rebooted on it's own. I power cycled and it went back into recovery mode on it's own.

I've tried this several times, and no go.

I've also tried going back to stock firmware, same thing, file uploads, wait 5-10, and it never reboots. I power cycle, and it goes right back into recovery mode on it's own.

What am I doing wrong here?

I've tried clearing NVRAM from the CFE web page as well.

This sounds more like a question for Asus Technical Support, especially if you can repro it with their stock firmware from Recovery.

Waiting longer is probably the key indeed. The RT-N66U flash isn't as fast as on newer models, there's been people reporting it took well over 20 mins for their router to complete recovery. Give it up to 40 mins I would say.

I second what RMerlin says. The length of time seems to be a problem from recover utility or CFE mini server. Don't know why, but it can take over 20 min. Give it time and don't touch the power.

Once initially flashed, flasihing from the web UI operates at normal speeds.

Thanks! You were right, it needed about 25 minutes to chew on the Tomato Shibby firmware, then it rebooted and all is well.
