Need a little QOS boost

I just added a VOIP PBX to my home office network. (PBX in a Flash)
I've got it working and ordinarily voice quality is good. But send me an email or download a file while your on the phone...forget it.

I'm currently using a Netgear FVS318v3 router that has "NO" QOS capability, which explains why I have problems.

I have a WRT54G v3.1 that just dug out of the closet, updated the firmware and voila, it has some QOS capability.

I would prefer not to swap the routers. One reason is that I need the extra ports on the netgear.

Is there a safe way to insert the WRT54G into the network and be able to use some of the QOS features?

I know it's probably crazy but I'm trying to make do with available parts. 3rd party firmware could be an option. I could also swap it out and just pick up a cheap switch for the extra ports.

Could I insert the Linksys between cable modem and the Netgear router with radio off and firewall on, and put the Netgear in the DMZ? Seems like it should work.

    What would you do?

Change to the Tomato forum, and take a look around. You would be able to do what you need with Tomato firmware by using the WRT as router. Read through the QOS thread below for information on QOS.

    See you there!

    Thanks for the advice.
That was one of the 3rd party firmware's I was considering.
    See you there.
