    Hey there:
I am setting up my first wireless network, and I could use some help choosing between a WRT54GS, WRT54GL, or WRTSL54GS. I guess I'm looking for the router that will give me the most functionality and flexibility.

If my understanding is correct, the GL will support 3rd party firmware, does this mean that the others don't?

Any info about the differences between these routers would be very helpful, and any suggestions on which one to purchase would be great. Also do I need to worry about what version I get ?

Good question. I want to get one of the WRT Types too, but im a little bit confused about the GS, GL and WRTSL Versions. Could anyone describe the differences between that types please?

First things first......... Welcome to the forums! :)

The WRT54GS starting with v5 no longer runs Linux and will not be able to run any 3rd party firmware with the exception of the micro build of DD-WRT running on the v5.

Both the GL and the WRTSL are running Linux, so third party firmware will work on them. The WRT54GL is basically a WRT54G v4 renamed. The WRTSL54GS has a USB port and 32 megs of memory in it. I have seen some articles and posts where people were referring to the SL as a v2 of the GL.

NOTE: for the SL you will need 3rd party firmware built for it.

Personally I would recommend either the WRT54GL or the WRTSL54GS.
