Need help designing my network

    Hi all,

I recently upgraded my networking hardware from an ancient BEFSR81 + an SMC router (used as a AP).

Now I have a v2.1 WRT54GS and a v3 WRT54G and I want to optimize my new setup. I was hoping you guys could give me some input as now I clearly have many more options. Both routers have the most recent Linksys firmware.

My house is old (plaster walls) and has three floors. The cable modem is in the attic (third floor).

I currently have the G (wireless turned off) attached to the modem on the third floor and a straight ethernet cable going to the GS on the second floor (as an AP) . The G is running DHCP and the GS is not (I have set the GS as 192.168.1.200). This simple setup actually works fine for most of the third and 2nd floor and a good part of the 1st floor.

    I have 4 issues/questions:

    1. I really would like to get signal in one of the 1st floor dead spots. I own an Apple Airport express that we use as a wireless printserver in that room. My understanding is that it can be used to extend networks via WDS (which I do not understand well, but it seems that the Linksys should be able to handle without 3rd-party). If this is more trouble than it is worth I am open to digging up another (non v5) WRT54G.

    2. I would like to increase my overall signal a bit if possible.

    3. I'm not 100% how to secure this network (its a mixed Mac/Win) -- I suppose I would set WEP on the GS (2nd-floor AP)?

    4. Was it necessary to turn off the wireless on the 3rd floor G hardware? If not, how should I set it up? Should I set the WEP on the G instead of the GS if I enable wireless?

I apologize if this is convoluted and of course, I would be happy to clarify, I just get the feeling that I could be doing a better job with this...

    Thanks in advance,

    JT

    Hi all!
I have two WRT54G routers running Alchemy-6.0-RC5a v3.01.3.8sv firmware. I would like to create a PtP link in Adhoc mode, but I am not sure how to set this up. The link distance is approx 1 mile over open water so terrain is not a prob.

Is there a setup guide somewhere that I can get step by step instructions?

I have the routers set up as AP and client at the moment, and am useing them as a backhaul for 30 (or so) clients. Would changing to ADhoc mode improve my data flow?

Am using a 19db grid antenna in vert polorization on each. with MAC filter enabled on the AP for the WRT (only one) client

Thanks. I have found this site to be very helpful
