Need help selecting firmware variant/version

So, I pulled out an old WRT54G V3 I had in my storage unit today because I need to run a router off of batteries and it uses just 1 amp at 12v, while the newer routers are drawing in the 2.5 amp range, some even at 19 volts. I had loaded tomato on it a few years ago because I needed the bandwidth graph to prove that Comcast was throttling my Netflix movies, but I would like to upgrade it to one of the newer tomato variants with updated software and features. My main concern is that it is stable, so it doesn't necessarily have to be the latest and greatest. I have no particular features in mind, I just want to keep up with technology and learn a few newer things. I have been looking through all the different variants and versions, and to say it is a bit overwhelming is an understatement. Any help selecting one would be appreciated.

I use a WRT54GL in one location on solar power and battery. Version 1.28.7633.3.

Thanks; I see on this forum that a couple of people mention that firmware 1.28.7633.3 is rock solid and is still being used for new installs. A solar panel is not a bad idea. Are you able to charge at the same time you are using the batteries? If so, what panel and charging circuitry are you using?

Edit: Tried to download but gave up going through all the hoops to get it, and besides, it is some wacky B1 archive. I will just pick one of the other variants.

Installed the latest "Tomato by Shibby". Download directly from site, unzip, install, done.

pjc123, No disrespect, but what are you talking about? B1 archive? The files on my download site (4shared) are not in any "wacky format" nor do you need to jump through hoops to get them. I just asked my son to get a copy of it to check, and he succeeded easily in less than 5 minutes. Are you sure you went to the correct site?

Re solar panels, yes, the panel charges the battery whenever it can, via a diode and simple current limiter, the router is run directly off the battery. Google for many charging circuits that can be used if you need to do this, or buy a commercial charger.

Hi toastman, I asked this question in the past (solar power) but didn't get any answer at that point of time. Glad to hear somebody did it as it turn out to be useful for some of my installations. One question: would you please post a detailed info on the solution (kit used including brand, model)? Perhaps an howto page? Appreciated!

The latest 106 has few things broken, wait for 107 if you want to use Shibby. The 105 has VPN broken.

For older routers you should use what people say it's "rock solid". I vote for 1.28.7633.3.

I saw that they are broken but I did not see the "K24" written...

    I found this: http://www.linksysinfo.org/index.php?threads/310n.57242/#post-217265

But i get confused seeing the results from the anon database regarding WRT310N and WRT310Nv1 because:

1 - I read that when the router doesn't specify version #, the version is 1, so i don't know what's the difference (the sticker a the back of mine says WRT310N without v1. The command nvram get wl0_corerev gives me the value "12")
    2 - in the results there are 3 WRT310N runing K26 (104) and 7 WRT310N v1 running K24 (105 ND)

Not sure what info should follow ...

amomp3, I understand some people like builds better than others, I myself enjoy Shibby more than Toastman or RAF in some occasions but I don't understand why you completely refuse to talk or test Toastman on your router even after many people and many times it resulted better, specially for older routers.

I gave you my suggestion, you'll have to wait for others for a different one.

Maybe I am on the wrong site. I searched for toastman-tomato-firwmare in Google and I got here:

    http://www.4shared.com/dir/v1BuINP3/Toastman_Builds.html#dir=v1BuINP3

At first I selected a folder and it said it was downloading a B1 file. At some point it was trying to charge me 9.99 to download as a zip instead. Then I tried a subfolder file and it takes me to the following link with a whole bunch of download buttons, and there is no way I am going to take the chance of clicking one of them and downloading some spyware program instead:

Yeah I saw that, but I needed something right away and I don't use those features anyway. It works fine for my purpose and I could always update it later.

Don't use the check boxes next to the folders. Click on the name, that'll take you into the folder. Click on an item in the folder and it'll open that item. Rinse, wash, repeat. Eventually you will have to create a 4shared account to download a file off 4shared, but you can create an account for free.

For the checkboxes to work you have to upgrade to a full (paid) 4shared account but pffft that, just click on the actual names and you can do everything necessary, even download multiple items at once (after a fashion).

If you google for 4shared passwords, there are many posted online, they will save u the trouble of making a throwaway email account.

That is what I had finally tried the other day. Just for kicks I tried it again today and it still takes me to the crazy 4shared download page when I click on an individual .trx file. Now it is automatically playing movies and sound on that page. Which download button on that page takes me to the file; I don't dare just start clicking any of them. Clicking on the file on that page does not work either. I even tried different browsers. I am done.

No offense, but are you sure you're at the 4shared site and you're not being redirected or hijakced? I just looked for myself, and I see no videos or music playing on any page clicking through to any of Toastman's files...

Incidentally, Toastman, at the default zoom level in Chrome, the filenames are truncated on the 4shared site. Makes it very difficult to see what you're actually downloading. I had to zoom one level out, then the whole filename was visible to me.

pjc123, Really. I am so tired of people complaining about 4shared. MILLIONS of people use this every day. It's one of the biggest file sharing sites in the planet. Kids at my childrens school use it every day. They are 10 and 11 years old.

I'm assuming that if you aren't smoking pot then you simply aren't on to the same planet as the rest of us, or your browser has been modified by a virus.

bmupton, if that is happening I expect one day Chrome will either fix their browser, or 4shared and others will have to work around it.

It is rather easy to see the full file names in 4shared, there should be a tab to 'switch to simple view' on the far right near the top by the magnifying glass, once you are in the dir you want to get builds from and you switch to simple view mode, it will then switch it to where you can see the full file names. Problem solved.

To be clear, I wasn't complaining...I've used 4shared a LOT. I just noticed that longer filenames were cut off at the default zoom level in Chrome. Actually, I think I was more complaining about Chrome...I haven't been overly impressed with it lately.

You have to create a 4shared login to download files. There isn't a "download without creating an account" link anywhere on 4shared. You can either create a 4shared account or you can do what Toastman suggested and find an account someone's posted the username & password to on the internet. Calm down, slow down, and take a few minutes to read what's in front of you. Just because it's not available instantaneously doesn't mean its not available.

I would guess the "movies and sound" you're seeing are from ads. I use Firefox + Adblock so I never see ads, and frankly unless you've taken steps to block ads you really have no reason to complain about the inevitable result of ads (sound, video, malware, etc.).
