I have a linksys WRT54GS v5 router hooked up to my Comcast DSL modem. When I hook one computer directly up to the modem, my service works fine, and the same when just one computer is on through either the wireless or wired router. However, many times when a few computers are online at the same time, the service will suddenly quit. The wireless network shows up, and the ethernet still shows as being connected, but it doesn't work. I think it sometimes says it has a self-assigned IP. I read somewhere that routers can only have a certain number of TCPs or something, and that if we have a number of computers going at once that it may cause problems. I also have heard that because my router's MAC address is not registered with comcast, it may cause problems, but when just one person is on through the router I think it always works, so that doesnt seem to be the problem. There are also sometimes problems when one of the computers tries to go in to a workplace VPN from home when others are already connected to the internet. Do I need a new router that can handle more TCPs or something, or what is the problem? We have 5 computers, but usually no more than 3-4 are online at the same time. Thanks!
