I have a WRT54GL (running Tomato) and cable internet connected to my PC. Everything runs fine and fast. Also connected to the router is my Son's PC via CAT5 and his speeds are 5 to 7 times slower than mine. The CAT5 cable is fine, we checked it by hooking directly to the modem and his PC. He plays a lot of Xbox Live and is having a real hard time with it. His friends are calling it his "Walmart internet" because it is so slow. Can anyone suggest a workaround to this problem.

How did you measure the speed?
    Which OS is he using?

And what does the xbox360 has to do with his PC ?

We tested using His OS is XP. Both the PC and Xbox Live run slow. He doesn't use them at the same time, he plugs the CAT5 cable into what ever he needs to use.

Does your Sons PC has Wlan ? If so, can you activate it to test the speed?

So you tested it directly with the PC of your son connected to the Modem and there is no speed issue. So the Problem must be located to the router.
Which version of Tomato do you use?

Did you tested the connection with both , your and your sons PC at the same time, and with only the PC of your son connected phisically to the router?

Did you configure any portforwards to your computer or did you enabled some restrictions like QoS or the other Access Restrictions which Tomato is offering?

Did you test another ethernet port on the router?

Do you have any QoC configured? any other type of firewall rules? Are you using DHCP or Static addresses

I'm using DHCP and have QoS enabled.

Is it still slow with QoS disabled?

QoS can cause a lot of problems if it is setup incorrectly.

And sorry i have to ask the obvious, is the other PC downloading/uploading, such as torrents or Steam?

I'll try it with QoS disabled and report back.
