Network newbie w/WRT54GL pre-use questions

I just bought a WRT54GL from Amazon. It should arrive in a couple of days. I've only set up one other router, and that was years ago. I can read instructions. All I want to do is share a new cable internet connection in my small house. 2 laptops and 2 desktops. Both laptops have 808.11G adapters built in. The desktops have ethernet cards (can add wireless cards).

My question is, will a novice user (me) need, or be able to make use of, third party firmware, like Tomato? Should I stick with the OEM installation and Linksys firmware? I have flashed firmware on other devices and never bricked any of them.

Thanks for whatever help you can give me that will keep me from losing what little remains of my hair.

Congratulations on your new purchase! You should be able to use Tomato with this router; it's pretty easy to do so. Once you get your new device and if you are stuck, then just ask here if you need any help setting up the network.
