Networking problems with WRT54GP2

I have a WRT54GP2 with the latest firmware 1.30.04beta that I am trying to use as a wireless router and VoIP gateway for my private network that sits behind another router that faces the Cable modem.

I have a wired subnet 192.168.1.* with one host and the WRT WAN interface (.1.17) on the LAN / WLAN side of the WRT I have configured teh subnet .17.* with two hosts using WiFi.

The problem that I experience is that the hosts on the different subnets can not see each other and if I turn of NAT in the WRT the DHCP service on the .17.* subnet stops working and internet is not accessible even if I configure a fixed IP address.

What I want to acheive is that all host should be visible to each other, if I use one or two subnets is not important, and I also need the VoIP to work since I do not have any regular phone service.

Is there anything I can do to fix the routing between the WAN and LAN ports that seams to be broken?

Or can I just skip the WAN port and connect everyting to the same subnet? If so, how do I get the VoIP part to work?

Or can I connect both the WAN and LAN ports to the same subnet and somehow disable all routing between the two?

Or do I need to buy a new device for my wireless network and use the WRT54GP2 just as a VoIP gateway?
