To fine-tune your network protocol these tools are invaluable

Mpegmaster, thank you for your post, some very useful stuff there.

    Another tip...

If you are a Windows user, go for Windows 7 Release Candidate which is on a year's free trial from Microsoft. No HO limit changes needed, very fast and stable even on most older hardware. Better TCP stack, newer congestion control algorithm built in. Compulsive Nagging Mode has been removed. If you're running Vista especially on a laptop, you'll find it such an improvement you'll probably have a heart attack.

See also TCP-Z for a useful utility.

Vista SP2 also removes the half-open connection limit.

Just a few additions I find useful:

    MTR or WinMTR
    http://www.bitwizard.nl/mtr/ or http://winmtr.sourceforge.net/

mtr combines the functionality of the 'traceroute' and 'ping' programs in a single network diagnostic tool. WinMTR is a windows clone of popular Matt's traceroute Linux program.

    Colasoft Ping Tool
    http://www.colasoft.com/ping_tool/
Colasoft Ping Tool is powerful in supporting to ping multiple IP addresses simultaneously and comparing response time in a graphic chart. Users can view historical charts and save the charts to a *.bmp file. With this build-in tool, users are able to ping the IP addresses of captured packets in a protocol analyzer (e.g. Colasoft Capsa) conveniently, including resource IP, destination IP or both.

    PingPlotter
    http://www.pingplotter.com/
PingPlotter offers some unique value for network monitoring and troubleshooting:
    * Graphically display performance metrics about the route your data takes to a server.
    * Monitor network performance over time, capturing the moments when problems surface.
    * Zoom in on a problem period and construct a compelling case to have someone help you solve a problem.
    * Get notified when there is a network problem.
    * Save data or images, and send to others for review.

    Subnet Mask Calculator
    http://www.aboutmyip.com/AboutMyXApp/SubnetCalculator.jsp

With subnet mask you can split your network into subnets.
Enter your IP address and play with the second netmask until the result matches your need.

This type of notation is also known as CIDR. CIDR (Classless Inter-Domain Routing, sometimes known as supernetting) is a way to allocate and specify the
Internet addresses used in inter-domain routing more flexibly than with
the original system of Internet Protocol (IP) address classes.

    Warriors of the Net

What is a Subnet Calculator good for? Well for 99% of Internet users it is of no importance.
So if you don't know what a subnet is this is probably not the Calculator for you.

    Network Exploration & Security Audits

    http://nmap.org/
Nmap - Free Security Scanner For Network Exploration & Security Audits.:thumbups:

Nmap ("Network Mapper") is a free and open source (license) utility for network exploration or security auditing.
Many systems and network administrators also find it useful for tasks such as network inventory,
managing service upgrade schedules, and monitoring host or service uptime.

Nmap uses raw IP packets in novel ways to determine what hosts are available on the network, what services
(application name and version) those hosts are offering, what operating systems (and OS versions)
they are running, what type of packet filters/firewalls are in use, and dozens of other characteristics.
It was designed to rapidly scan large networks, but works fine against single hosts.

Nmap runs on all major computer operating systems, and official binary packages are avalable for Linux, Windows, and Mac OS X.

How to Use the... OpenDNS IPv6 Sandbox

How to Use the 'OpenDNS' IPv6 Sandbox:friends:
    http://www.opendns.com/ipv6/
Experimenting with IPv6 DNS requires a small change to your computer or router settings to point to the IPv6-enabled OpenDNS IPv6 addresses.

    1. Verify you have IPv6 Enabled
You can visit Kame to verify you have a working IPv6 IP address. If you see a swimming turtle, you are ready to continue configuring. If you don't, perhaps you need an IPv6 Tunnel setup, like the free one you can get at http://tunnelbroker.net/.

    2. Enter the OpenDNS IPv6 Sandbox IPs...

Do you operate your own DNS resolvers?

Do you operate your own DNS resolvers?:friends:

If you operated the DNS resolvers in use at your home or organization, enabling IPv6 on your DNS server is easy.

    • ISC BIND: Make sure that IPv6 support is compiled in when you ./configure it. It is enabled by default. If you recently added IPv6 to your server, simply restart your named process, as you normally would.
    • PowerDNS: Enable aaaa-additional-processing and configure query-local-address6 in your recursor.conf. Restart powerdns.
    Confirmation:

    dig aaaa aaaa.v6ns.test-ipv6.com

This should return back an aaaa record without errors. :givehug:

ipv6mon - by... SI6 Networks' Address Monitoring Daemon

    http://www.si6networks.com/tools/ipv6mon/

ipv6mon is a tool meant for monitoring IPv6 address usage on a local network. It is meant to be particularly useful in networks that employ IPv6 Stateless Address Auto-Configuration (as opposed to DHCPv6), where address assignment is decentralized and there is no central server that records which IPv6 addresses have been assigned to which nodes during which period of time.

ipv6mon employs active probing to discover IPv6 addresses in use, and determine whether such addresses remain active.

This appears to be a Linux version only...

    Cheers!

    PureText

    Et al,

Have you tried 'PureText'? - http://www.stevemiller.net/puretext/

What PureText Will and Will Not Do

PureText only removes rich formatting from text. This includes the font face, font style (bold, italics, etc.), font color, paragraph styles (left/right/center aligned), margins, character spacing, bullets, subscript, superscript, tables, charts, pictures, embedded objects, etc. However, it does not modify the actual text. It will not remove or fix new-lines, carriage returns, tabs, or other white-space. It will not fix word-wrap or clean up your paragraphs. If you copy the source code of a web page to the clipboard, it is not going to remove all the HTML tags. If you copy text from an actual web page (not the source of the page), it will remove the formatting.

PureText is basically equivalent to opening Notepad, doing a PASTE, followed by a SELECT-ALL, and then a COPY. The benefit of PureText is performing all these actions with a single Hot-Key and having the result pasted into the current window automatically.

    NvramDiff

A simple tool to compare two nvram dumps and generate "redo" and "undo" command sets.

Download NvramDiff (16 kB - includes both executable and C# source code)

    Requirements:
    • Microsoft Windows XP or later (sorry no Linux or MacOS)
    • Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1
NvramDiff is very simple in use: Just paste the nvram output of the original situation in "Original nvram", then after making changes to the router configuration paste the new nvram output in "Configured nvram" and finally click "Generate Differences". The resulting output can be used as "redo" command set. Reverse the instructions (original nvram dump in "Configured nvram" and modified in "Original nvram") to create an "undo" command set.

The differences output can be copy/pasted directly on the router's shell (telnet, SSH or execute system commands via the web interface). Don't forget to save the changes to the nvram by executing nvram commit and reboot the router afterwards.

The tool is smart enough to handle nvram dumps that are out of order or contain multiline values like complex scripts.

    Thanks for this!

I used to have a traceroute years ago(Win 3.1) that showed the nodes on a map but I could never find anything I liked for later windows versions. That Axence netTools does it great. :)
