    Why not? It has nothing to do with the accesspoint (router).

    Btw, protection is easy: Make sure that your computer will
    never connect automatically to an unencrypted WLAN.
    With other words: If you are regularly using an unencrypted
    WLAN, do not add it to the list of the "preferred networks"
    (or whatever this is called with your OS) the computer joins
    automatically. Instead, confirm the connection manually.
    On the other hand, automatically connecting an encrypted
    WLAN is safe.
