New Victek releases

Hi guys, I've been working in some other firmware that I consider will be the next step in the router market (AP81/91) platform but I love Tomato RAF, don't worry,

I'm waiting the official 1.26 release and I'll push RAF release also with some interesting features for non English natives (multi-language menu).

By the way. I'll be interested to include some other language, French will be made by one guy who contacted me already. I'll do Spanish, Catalan and Vasc language.

Of course, anyone interested to get his own language please PM me and I'll send the word list to be translated.

This is one of the add planned for next RAF release.. some skins will go away (Absolon will stay as main skin) to leave space for language files.

Edit: darthboy, tstrike2000's, It's a pleasure for the user to forget he have to 'Reboot' or 'Upgrade'....., the world most famous words, LOL

    Vic,
I was curious what "RAF" stands for? I did check Spanish words for RAF, but nothing came up...

  3. GhaladReam

I asked Vic that very same question in the past. RAF is simply a type of actual Tomato. The one you see pictured in my avatar is a RAF tomato.

In the meantime, updated to BusyBox 1.15.2 (stable version). I'm waiting and in the meantime updating...

    I've shoved the wiki into google translate but I'm still not clear on how this works so I'd be grateful if someone could elaborate (google has failed me);

For the ip/mac bw limiter, does it take priority over the class qos or are they used in tandem i.e. is bandwidth first limited then class rules applied or vis-versa?

Do the download & upload bandwidth field need to match those under qos/basic?

What exactly is the priority field? Does it relate to the qos classes or is it the order in which (unused?) bandwidth is assigned?

    What is the TC field?

What is the arp binding? How does it effect the network and what does limiting unlisted machines do?

    Azuse LI Guru Member

Well that explains alot :) Just to be clear however, while the ip/mac takes priority, if a device is limited to say 4000k will the regular qos rules still apply to that 4000k i.e. will highest classed traffic still go out before class c?

"that I consider will be the next step in the router market"

I agree that the days of Linksys wrt's and Buffalo HP54's are coming to a close. I've been wondering what the next step is going to be in terms of hardware that will allow us to use 3rd party firmwares.

I also wonder what the "next big platform" might be but don't know enough to speculate.

Victek's mention of Atheros AP81/91 (and AP83?) based routers got me curious so did some googling. Found some info on the OpenWRT wiki and some posts on the DD-WRT forums. Brainslayer posted a bit less then a year ago that these chipsets seemed buggy which was limiting speed, but given the age of the posts that may have improved. A quick search of DD-WRT supported routers didn't find any obvious hits on these chipsets, seems to be a work in progress.

Victek, thanks for the links to read up on. In the meantime I ordered a RT-N16 from Provantage. If it ships, it will be my first significant upgrade in a while. Sounds like initially I'll be "stuck with" the Asus software but also sounds like it's not 1/2 bad. At least one DD-WRT developer already has one and is working on it so should be at least that. Anyway, thanks again.

Is there anything known about a problem when the RAF firmware would answer DHCP Requests from the WAN Port?

Some Network Admin in my school think so, but I think its nonsense.

  16. Victek

    Victek Network Guru Member

First news about this... would you ask to the 'Network Admin' to be more detailed in the 'some problem' advice?

  17. schoergei

    schoergei Addicted to LI Member

Yeah its hard to believe that from my side too... He just said so "An AP is giving responses to PCs"...

  18. RonWessels

    RonWessels Network Guru Member

Wait a sec. When an AP gives DHCP responses to a wireless client, that's not going through the WAN port. That's someone hooking up a router to an existing network incorrectly. Probably they connected a LAN port to the network to provide access point functionality but without disabling the DHCP server.

  19. schoergei

    schoergei Addicted to LI Member

It wasnt so that a DHCP Server gives responses to WAN side i tested it. The problem was that when i changed the MAC i got huge Network Traffic, and of that lots of problems in the network.

It seems upnp is overriding my port forwarding. I've got udp 3074 forwarded to an xbox, a couple pcs that use games for windows live and it's using upnp to forward 3074 to itself, tomatoes ignoring the port forward already set.

Is this a bug or deliberate (every upnp router I've used has never allowed upnp to use ports forwarded to other devices)? It's making port forwarding redundant, and messing up qos :(

  21. mstombs

    mstombs Network Guru Member

I wouldn't expect the Tomato upnp daemon miniupnpd to know what manual port forwards are set, so it could accept an existiing forwarded port - but I wouldn't expect it to work:- look at the output of

    Code:
root@unknown:/tmp/home/root# iptables -t nat -nvL PREROUTING
for example, on my test system runny teddy_bear mod

    Code:
Chain PREROUTING (policy ACCEPT 125 packets, 34140 bytes)
pkts bytes target prot opt in out source destination
        0 0 DROP all -- vlan1 * 0.0.0.0/0 192.168.1.0/24
        0 0 DNAT icmp -- * * 0.0.0.0/0 192.168.2.200 to:192.168.1.1
        0 0 DNAT tcp -- * * 0.0.0.0 192.168.2.200 tcp dpt:1234 to:192.168.1.99:1234
       15 8640 upnp all -- * * 0.0.0.0/0 192.168.2.200
Manual port forwards take precedence over upnp ones

  22. Azuse

    Azuse LI Guru Member

Sound's like an unintentional bug to me but you're right, the upnp forwards aren't working. Then this creates the problem of upnp & port forwarding not functioning correctly together, and messing up qos as well. I'm assuming there's no simple solution to this problem?

    iptables -I FORWARD -p tcp -s 192.168.1.3 -m connlimit --connlimit-above 600 -j REJECT

what about if I want to limit for udp connection? just change the tcp to udp? anything else need to modify?

    Hey Victek.

Since the final version has an eta like blizzard games, ie, "when its done", any chance we can get a beta version of current work? Some features of the current 1.26 beta are pretty useful, getting it with your mod would be the best of both worlds. (the double mac addresses, for example).

    Thank you for your time,

Will you be releasing your mod for the WNR3500L version of Tomato, once that router hits market? I am certainly hoping for it, as my WRT54G-TM is a little past it's limit when trying to use the full 25/25 speed of my connection, but I really like your mod.

I also am using a WRT54G-TM. have you tried overclocking it to 250 MHz? When I did that I noticed added responsiveness and speed. If you haven't tried this, make sure to add a small amount of extra cooling (small fan or heatsink on cpu, or both). I've been running mine at 250 MHz for several months now, 100% rock solid.

Only 1K $ ??? It's nothing for a beast like WRT... i think we can clock it up to 250 M $ Seriously...

Okay, sorry for spamming - i'm so eager to try out net RAF... got into delirium...

I'll try not to get myself banned...

    EDIT:

On the serious side, I think I might have a problem...

I'm running configuration as specified in my sig and lately i'm getting dnsmask crashes (RAM seems to be the issue, i think someone even covered that earlier in separate topic)
My wrt goes down to 500kb of free RAM and then just drops few things (prolly in effort to free up some RAM)

What can i do (besides killing QoS and ADBLOCK script) to relieve the pressure on my router... disabling few services?

    Suggestions please...

P.S. Does newer kernel bear smaller memory footprint? :) :) :)

In one hand - original tomato, supporting of DIR-320 added in build 35 from 10/07/2009, in other - your`s mod, whom aviable - 8512.2 ND don`t work. Your mod for asus router`s, imho, must work perfect with this device, but 1.23 don`t support him. So, I`m waiting for new mods from you. It`s a great work!

Victek, a couple questions, if you don't mind.

1- You said you're migrating to a new kernel, does that mean 2.6?

2- Have you gotten far enough to see if it runs faster or slower than the old kernel? This 1 scares me, as my router is very close to it's limit, and I read that openWRT runs considerably slower on the 2.6 kernel.

3- Are you planning to add any new routers, like the Netgear WNR3500L or the more impressively spec'd Asus RT-N16? I'm willing to buy you an Asus if it will help, just say the word and give me shipping details.

    Thanks
    Ed

  82. Victek

    Victek Network Guru Member

1 - No, I'm not migrating to 2.6 due to limitation in WRT54G, I'm trying to update the former original kernel as Teddy_Bear did.

2 - I think Tomato runs faster in ethernet and wireless performance versus other firmware (I did not test all the firmware available to say 100% sure) but the word 'faster' is not enough for me I prefer as most of us to run 'stable' and 'durable', is the main target and right concept of Tomato, I want to keep it.

3 - The new models (Asus/Netgear) using MIPS2 r2 CPU (4717-4718) are a great opportunity to upgrade for a new kernel (2.6) I think maintain 2.4 kernel (as myopenrouter project did) is to go one step backward and Tomato needs to be split in two branches 2.4 and 2.6 kernel.

Thanks for your offer, I got an Asus RT-N16 one month ago and I'm working on it.

    Regards
    Vic

    Hi Victek,

I am looking to try VPN for the first time, but can't seem to find that function in your build.

I've been using your setup for quite awhile now and love the bandwidth limits per MAC address, so I am hesitant to switch to someone else's build.

Is there a chance of you incorporating VPN into the next build of your firmware?

Thanks and keep up the good work!

VPN in Victek`a mod would be a really nice feature, but lets not be so demanding. its already amazing. by thy time, try the Thor mod, its based on Victek`s, and it has VPN. but be careful with the version you install - some of them are availavle only on 4mb+ memory routers. 8MB WRT54G-TM + Thor mod is really good choice. best regards!

Hi, what does the "Remote Forwarding" checkbox do under "SSH Daemon"? I have left it unchecked while still able to remotely SSH into the router for proxying purposes. So in what situations do I need "Remote Forwarding" enabled?

And regular Tomato doesn't have such an option. What does regular Tomato do with Remote Forwarding?

If i am right, it provides the possibility to forward local ports to remote ports, e.g. forward your local port 5000 to a port inside your router's network, like 192.168.1.55:80. So you dont have to open alot of ports to the world but still access the services on your home network. Disabling this option will not disable remote ssh connection, but forwarding these ports.

I just buy an asus RT-N16 (hard to get it).
I don't think tomato can ever work on it...no ?

And if you try dd-wrt with kernel 2.6, it seem that the cpu is 100% working. bug ?

for the moment tomato doesn't work on it.

For the dd wrt bug it's only because you kept upnp on.

    Hey Vic,

On your comment 3... does the RT-N16 chipset (bcrm 4718) have to run kernel 2.6?

Or is it possible to run the RT-N16 platform on the current tomato (2.4 kernel) source code with some limitations such as the need to run an older version of the brcm wireless driver used today.

    Thanks,
    -TurtleFang

Can run 2.4 (Netgear 3500) but I know .. nobody will be happier to go one step backwards. I know, it will take a lot of efforts but we should go to 2.6.

    You welcome... and Merry Christmas

    Merry Christmas Victek.

Hoping to see your 1.26/1.27 release soon. Out of curiosity have you had a chance to look into getting the bandwidth graphs to cache the last 5-10 minutes so you dont have to start from scratch when logging into the router?

That and easier management of per-ip bandwidth tracking via IMQ's is all I'd ever ask for. After that I don't think I'll upgrade again.

I glossed over the last few pages but didnt notice a particular reason to do this hacked 2.6 kernel work. Could someone fill me in on its merits?

Will be a Tomato RAF release and for keeping the dating will be 1.27 but no relation with oficial 1.27 except in the visual GUI, as the latest releases in the forum we're little bit out from the original Tomato branch with many changes, but, Yes, it will be a 1.27 release.

Don't mean to be a nag, but do you have an ETA on your next release Vic? This much dev/testing must mean we can expect some cool stuff :)

I'm having some 'hardware' problems to sort out, I hope to be released in the second week of January.

Happy New Year for all !!

Victek, any idea when you'll have something for the RT-N16?

If/when that something appears, will it be Tomato?

Any chance of a mod for WNR3500L? I can't really consider it a Tomato capable router unless Jon or 1 of the modders supports it.

    Thanks
    Ed

I just purchased an NT16 for $85 shipped so i'm wanting to know too. The ASUS has a ton of potential.

I hope WRT610Nv2 is also in the picture.... It's *arguably* better than the RT-N16 (due to simultaneous 5Ghz band)... But yes, less RAM...

Of note, I'm currently running dd-wrt on my newly purchased WRT610Nv2, and it's working flawlessly... I had been with Tomato / Tofu / Thibor for so long on my 54g... To be perfectly honest, there's something about Tomato that I love...

edit: hmm, as i can see bandwith monitoring is not working. i did not do anything to it... it was always enabled.
