New WRT54GL - advice for tomato install

I have an old WRT54G v2 with Tomato installed...and it works great...but the install initially bricked the router and I had to push the stock firmware back in with TFTP to get it back. Fortunately, it worked...and then I was able to install Tomato successfully. *whew*

I turned out to like Tomato so much, that I bought a new WRT54GL v1.1 and plan on using it as a bridge...to replace an old 802.11b WET 11. Any ideas on what first steps I should take?

The router has a CD that has a large prominent label stating something like "install me first before connecting ANY cables". Why the heck would I install anything to use or configure a router? Do the new routers come in an unusable configuration...only made usable with the software on the CD? Can't I just fire up a browser and hit 192.168.1.1?

I would VERY much like to avoid installing any Linksys software on my PC if it is not necessary. I would then also like to install Tomato without bricking this new beauty. :)

I'll take any and all advice that you folks might have...for just as long as I can resist plugging it in and diving in. ;)

    Thanks in advance.

    cheers,
    Steve

Throw the CD into a river or keep as a drink coaster and flash tomato through the GL's GUI. After the flash is complete press the reset button for 30 seconds. Wait for the router to cycle back up and log in.

    Same as above.

There isn't any software on the CD, at least nothing to be installed on your PC.

Installing Tomato from the GUI shouldn't be any problem, I've done that with my GL's.
