Greetings! I am new to the forum, and new to router tweaking. I'm a tweaker at heart, but have never done any more to a router than hook it up and set the network. Anyway, I am currently using a WRT54G ver 5 which i plan to keep in case I brick the one I just bought on ebay. I just picked up a version 1.0 for a decent price, and I'd like some suggestions as to which third party firmware to go with. As I understand it, Talisban is out since it doesn't support 1.0. Obviously, this decision is based on my wants and needs. I don't (yet) do any port forwarding as I'm not a gamer, and I don't use VPN or VOIP. I have a HughesNet satellite internet connection so I am somewhat limited on what I can do. I have 1 wired desktop and 1 wireless laptop, and an occasional extra laptop or 2. My main reason for wanting third party firmware (besides the obvious.....TWEAKING!!), is to extend transmit range, hopefully increase security, and to be able to set access restrictions that actually work. I've tried and tried to set the access restrictions in my version 5 so my daughter can't access myspace.com from the laptop, but haven't had any luck. I'm hoping one of the third party firmwares will have a more reliable access restriction function. Sorry for being long-winded. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Thanks for the reply. That was the one I was leaning towards. I'll go d/l it now and I'm sure I'll be back once the v.1 arrives!! Thanks again!

Well, the "new" router arrived today. The seller misread the serial number. He said it was CDF0 which would be a v 1.0. As it turns out, it's a CDF5 which makes it a v2.0!! Even better! I've already downloaded the HyperWRT file and copied the config file from my v5. After my nap I'll set it up and see what happens. Any warmings or suggestions would be appreciated. Will the config file from the v5 transfer to the v2? If not, it's no big deal to configure the v2 manually. Anyway, thanks for a great forum and any help you can provide.
