    Hi Everyone :)

New to the forum, and to the WRT54GS, so i hope i'm not too simplistic.

a bunch of my neighbours keep their wifi networks open to share VOIP with everyone... RESPECT

How can i use and configure my WRT54GS with HyperWRT to connect to open networks around me rather than to my regular internet connection ?

can anyone point me in the right direction ?

You'll need to flash a different firmware such as Alchemy or DD-WRT onto your router and then look into the Client Mode option. ;)

Re: newbie on WRT54GS : sniffing friendly networks

That can be done, but just how easy it is depends on unstated parameters. First, since you have HyperWRT firmware, are you inclined to mess with the command line via a telnet session to the WRT54GS's Linux OS? If not, you need Satori, Alchemy, Talismen, or DD-WRT firmware. HyperWRT, as far as I can tell will not support it from the web interface. Of the others, DD-WRT positively provides better support than the others. I'm not sure about Alchemy and Talismen (I don't remember off hand if they have the "survey" option under Status-->Wireless or not).

Otherwise, this may not be significant anyway. If your computer has a wifi client mode card, then that is what you need to reconfigure to connect to the neighbor instead of your existing Access Point.

But, it your computer is connected to the WRT54GS with a wired LAN connection, then yes you can put it into client mode and connect to another Access Point.

Post a few more specifics, and we can talk about how to do it.

i'll try flashing to the DD WRT as it seems the easiest solution

hey thanks for your answers and sorry for the delay, was away

i since flashed to the dd-wrt firmware and i have my computer connected via LAN to the wrt54gs.

I set up client mode, but i get stuck here.
any idea or pointer to connect that way to a hotspot ?
