    Hi all,

Just switched my router from BEF11WS4 to WRT54G. I have configured it for a desktop and a laptop. Installation went fine without any major issues. Did not use the program that came on the CD. configured the whole stuff using the web admin. One thing that caught my eye was that it's reporting the firmware version as v8.002. Not much info seems to be there on the net on this firmware. looks very new. thinking in a couple of days when I have some spare time to try out DD-WRT firmwares.

Any pointers regarding the new firmware on the router or moving to DD-WRT. I don't want to end up with brick. :)

    Thanks in advance.

If it really is a WRT54G and one of the newer ones, you may be out of luck when it comes to third party firmware. This is because Linksys crippled the newer WRT54G hardware to save on costs.

    1. Verify that you have a WRT54G and not a WRT54GL or a WRT54GS. You're probably right.
    2. If you actually have a WRT54GL (the "L" stands for Linux), you're in the clear for sure.
    3. If you have a WRT54G, look at the sticker on the bottom to see what hardware revision you have. Mine, for example, says WRT54Gv2. If yours is newer than v4, you're out of luck.*

    * There is a DD-WRT micro which can run on at least some of the newer routers, but as a Tomato user I'm not too knowledgeable about that; check the DD-WRT forum, wiki, or website for more information. Note that it does a lot less than the full DD-WRT.

    Thank you. I checked the version and it's a V8 :(

I am kind of sad that I can't try out the open source versions of the firmware, but apart from that I am getting more out of the default kernel and I am happy with it's performance.
