I have recenlty installed a wrt54gs on dsl(pppoe). I used to use a WRT54G v1 (and was very happy with the stock performance[bt incl]). To make a long boring story short; I am now running a wrt54gs and needless to say I am not happy with the overall performance. (my dsl modem has changed form the original used with the WRT54G)

I was not aware that linksys firmware was changable...

...so for a newbie like me were do I start?

I have read a few things and am now more confused as to which steps to follow...

DD-WRT? THIBOR(or whatever) tofu? and where is the best place to dl everything?

the unit is brand new I am aware that doing this will void my warranty and all support from the linksys people, but if this is successfull I could careless about all that.

so with out screaming or laughing at my crazy newbie message can somebody please help?

Well, if you go HyperWRT, you want Thibor.

    DD-WRT = the most features.

HyperWRT = fastest Internet routing speed, closest to stock firmware.

Both are better than stock firmware, and if you want to try 'em both, go for it. They are both free (though sending $ to the firmware authors is highly recommended once you decide on one and try it out for a little while).

 just curious why I can't just go straight to HyperWRT and skip DD-Wrt?

    What Version of WRT54GS u r using...
Cos for the time being.. like mine..Hyper cant support version 4 and 3 for the GS (speed booster version) while DD-WRT yes.

Just incase ... U need Mini WRT of DD b4 flashing to STRD

According to the website: http://www.thibor.co.uk/... HyperWRT (Thibor 14) not only supports the V4, it can be flashed from stock... no DD-WRT required.
