    Hiya,

I was just about to buy a slug, having heard great things, but there's nothing worse than buying something and having a new (better? faster?) version come out literally the next day, so I thought I'd ask if anyone had heard of any plans by Linksys to bring out a Next-generation NSLU2 Slug?

    Ta!

lol this is the $64,000 question. if we said no, linksys would make us to be liars the next day i guess. I personally have not heard any "rumours" of any new product, manbe some of the VARs here might have some info?

    It always is ... :)

Yeah THAT would be be good to know... I'd buy a USB2 HD now (like Maxtor Onetouch III) for backups and insert Slug2? later :)

    Yeah !

We need a NSLU3 with Gigabit Enthernet port, 16MB flash ROM (or more) and Built-in UPnP server :)

    Am I dreaming ?

    yeah, something like that :)

Actually one of the reasons to ask is that Linksys has produced a bunch of very similar router products, one after the other with what seems to be short product cycles between new models (albeit kudos to them for carrying on producing the old models). The NSLU2 has been out since what ... 2 years now (tomshardware e.g. reviewed it in July 2004). It must be due for some nifty extras surely... :)

If Linksys was planning on bringing out an NSLU2 version 2, look for lots of sales or rebate promotion from all stores on the old model NSLU2 units just before the introduction of the new version to clear old stock inventory.

Well that's the thing. Linksys did NOT do this with the WRT54G line. WRT54G's are being sold today, even after all the subsequent (so-called) "new improved" models. So will they really bang out the promotions? And do they need to?

I recently posted that I've been to several Wal-Marts here in Georgia and all of them have had the NSLU2 units red tagged and on the discount shelf. Perhaps they've been discontinued?

A local Office Depot has their NSLU2 stock on sale. I don't remember the exact sale price, but it was discounted about 20-25% off their regular price which was about at MSRP.

NO. No. No-no-no-no-no-no... *checks for new product announcements* No?

Oh, I'd take a hot swappable, NTFS, Gigibit ethernet NSLU3 too.
Until then, I'm happy with the NSLU2.

If the price and hardware requirements weren't so ridiculously high, I'd be very interested in seeing a budget windows storage 2003 server (think iomega 200d). But i guess I'm just more Microsoft-solution-oriented :)
