(Windows) Without a WINS server running on the VPN server subnet, we have found it possible to browse the files on the machines in the VPN subnet (from the VPN client) only by having an entry for each machine included in the lmhosts file located on the client machine. (see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q150800/.) This file is in C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc . Since the lmhosts entries are a mapping between IPs and machine names, this has the disadvantage of requiring that the IPs of the machines not change; DHCP cannot be used. nmbd is a NetBIOS nameserver included in Samba. (see http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/man/nmbd.8.html.) An instance of nmbd running on the WRT54G on the VPN subnet would allow connected clients to see other machines on the VPN subnet without the need for the lmhosts file entries, or the need for fixed IPs on machines in the VPN subnet.
