No more WRT54G/GS versions? Only default "WRT54G/GS"

I went to bestbuy today in my area (Florida, USA) and they said that linksys cut all the WRT54G/GS versions and only produces only one default version called the WRT54G or the WRT54GS.

I'm not sure what version is this, but it does seem different from the first and final versions of the WRT54G and GS.

Will I still be able to download 3rd party firmwares like HyperWRT or DD-WRT?

Am I to understand that these routers don't have version numbers anymore? There would have to be something that would distinguish it from a previous version (i.e the serial number).

In order to use 3rd party firmware, you need enough memory in the router. Linksys reduced the memory in the latest versions to save on costs.

But your salesperson was mistaken (or lying). Linksys still sells an equivalent to the WRT54G v4 under the name WRT54GL. I have two of them, both loaded with 3rd party firmware (Thibor's HyperWrt on one and Tofu's tasty new Tomato on the other).

Here is a link to Dell. But other online vendors carry it as well. Shop around.
