Which mode should I use for usb and vpn for my asus rt -n16. I tried the teddy bear's 2.6 kernel and there is a known issue with the vpn. I tried the work around which let me save my vpn setting but I was not able to get the Status to poll on the router's GUI.

I tried this one "tomato-NDUSB-1.27.8745-vpn3.6.trx" on this router and it did not work.

Only the 2.6 kernel based builds can be installed on your router. You'll risk bricking your device by attempting to install a MIPSv1 build.
If the workaround doesn't work for you, how about temporarily reverting to dd-wrt until beta12 with a permanent fix comes out?

Yes, I almost bricked it. I had to use TFTP to get it working again.
    Finally the workaround worked.

    It was a close call.

Asus also has the restore mode though.. press the restore button while plugging in power and you can then use Asus' restore utility - or at least that's the theory (and it worked out for me multiple times - though I never attempted to load the wrong firmware.. it was only a Tomato Mod Upgrade gone wrong).
