    Short story:

    1. bought NSLU2 off eBay
    2. couldn't get to the GUI, though the setup CD recognized/configured it;
    3. got a cup of coffee, settled in for long troubleshooting then "bing" (sound of lightbulb going off) ...yeah, I *know* lightbulbs don't make sounds unless they pop!
    4. searched Linksys forums and found the problem.
    5. presto had the solution (some of you are chuckling because you've seen this problem, right?)
    6. applied solution
    7. finished coffee which hadn't even become cold through steps 4-6

    Thanks LinksysInfo!

    I had to use the "Eraseall" utility from Linksys to erase the EEPROM and push a new firmware to it.
