The WPSG54U2, while a great piece of hardware, does have its shortcomings.

There have been numerous reports spread diffusely over the web about which printers do and do not work with the server. Unfortunately, not even Linksys has an official list of compatible printers.

So, hopefully the linksys users of linksysinfo.org will be able to compile a list so that potential users know what their getting into. I will update this OP as often as I can. So, post your printer and how it works.

You can tell if its not recognized if the appropriate LED doesn't light up when the printer is connected.

    Printer
    USB
    Parallel
    notes

    Brother HL-1440
    USB - no
    Parallel - yes
note - linksys did not know of this incompatibility

    HP LaserJet 1000
    USB - no
    Parallel - N/A
note - Also incompatible with PPS1UW

    HP LaserJet 1200
    USB - yes
    Prallel - Unknown

    HP DeskJet 5650
    USB - Unknown
    Parallel- yes

I wonder why usb light on the print server is not litting up whenever the usb printer is connected. The computer can detect the ps fine but it detects the printer as 'offline' :(

Looks like the print server was not detecting the printer :x Is there any polarity problem for USBs :?:

    Re: USB

This is what happens when you try to connect a printer that the Print Server doesn't support.

    What Printer are you using?
Does it work when you connect it via Parallel?

    Re: USB

my printer doesn't have a parallel port. How can you tell if the printer is incompatible with the print server :?: Is there any difference between each devices' USB ports :?:

Basically, it is just a physical connection right?

You can tell that the printer is not supported when the USB light will not come on after plugging in the printer, which is what you said happened.

Concerning USB Printers, any of them should work if the, my guess, print server correctly complied with the USB 2.0 standard.

There is no difference between the ports, it should act just like any other USB host-client would work like connecting the printer directly to your computer.

I gonna guess you have an HP Deskjet; is that correct? If not what model and manufacturer?

The model is HP1000 which is actually a lazer jet printer. Tried it on WPS54GU2 using the usb port (2.0 compliant) as well as the PPS1UW (1.1 compliant) same thing happen :(

might be worth upgrading the firmware of this product as well. dunno if it would help but it might

you can also try and hard-reset the printserver and then powercycle the printserver, the printer and the router.also check if you have installed the drivers for hp 1000 lazerjet using its cd and not from the common set of drivers listed in winxp.

Unfortunately, the only way you even get a chance to deal with the driver problem is if the print server will first find and connect to the printer.

In the case of both print servers, the USB/Parallel LED should illuminate as soon as you connect the two physically by the appropriate cable. If that doesn't happen, you're dead in the water.

    Regarding firmware:

The WPS54GU2 has only one update from 6031 to 6032 which the option to update firmware via the web admin console. This should indicate they intended to update the firmware at some point. that was 6 months ago.

The PPS1UW has never had a firmware update - I couldn't even tell you the current version number.

Linksys are you listening? Not yet? Well, we'll take care of that

    Printer compatibility

    My 2 cents,

I have the HP LaserJet 1200 running on the USB, and the HP DJ5650 running on the parallel...

    No issues, at all.

A few of the print server's shortcomings that I've found

I've encountered the following shortcomings with this print server. Please feel free to share yours

    1. The obvious, no true USB 1.1/2.0 support as seen by the randomness of USB printers it likes/dislikes. BTW, I have a Brother HL-1440 laser and, yes, it doesn't work on the USB port of the print server but does work on the parallel port. When I called Linksys support about this, their solution was that I should go and buy a new HP LaserJet printer......idiots.

    2. No WPA security. I have an all 802.11G network that now has to run with WEP128 for it to all work together because the print server of all things can only support WEP 128. If anyone has any suggestions on getting the WRT54G to use WPA with my WPC54G PC card and WEP with my WPS54GU2, please let me know.

    3. The stinkin' WEP 128 only works for Key 1. When I tried to configure my network for any of the other keys, i.e. 2-4, whenever I hit the save button and it told me everything was saved successfully, I went back to the configuration page and it was set back to Key 1.

    4. The Bi-Admin utility was a royal pain the rump.

Again, please feel free to share your experiences as I'm wondering if I have a defective unit or the firmware is really that crappy.

    Cheers!

Thats funny they suggested that you buy an HP LaserJet as those have the WORST record of working with this product! Its still on the shelves for sale at $150+ and no update for a year now. I think we deserve something.

jdepew, I agree and really hope that a new firmware is released. I would hope that Linksys has realized some of these faults by now with the print server and are able to remedy it in under a year of their last firmware update. I guess all we can do is wait and see.

    Hi,

I recently bought a WPS54GU2 and successfully connected a HP 6P on the parallel port but my HP 7760 photosmart on the USB don't work. The USB LED doesn't light up and the status is offline on the management interface.

Do you have any idea to solve this problem ? Any hardware modification possible ?

Do you think it's an hardwre problem or it can be resolved later with a firmware update ?

USB Light on, but Printer does not respond

I Installed the WPS54GU2 successfully. I had no problems with setup. When I plug my Lexmark X73 all in one sprinter-scanner-fax into the USB port on the PrintServer, the USB light comes on. I set up the PrintServer Driver, and it assigns my Lexmark X73 to the proper port. However, the printer does not print. I tried printing from both the Printer Properties window (Windows XP, Service Pack 2) and from the BiAdmin Management tool. Both times the print job failed.

Does this mean that I also have an incompatible printer? The other posts seem to indicate that if the USB light does not come on, it indicates that your printer is incompatible.

Epson Stylus C86 works on USB2 port.

    Lexmark x75 AIO and wps54g

    2 desktops
    1 laptop
1 lexmark prin trio x75 usb
    1 wrt54gs
    1 wps54g

Make sure you install the printer on all machines prior to even dealing with print server. Had to reset router to factory defaults, once I got ps working went ahead and changed all settings on router and ps. I can't use the scanning part of Lexmark thru ps but that is not a biggie. Did notice that you have to make sure usb connector to ps is firmly in place or usb light on ps will not light up. If my wife can print without having to call me due to printer errors than that baby is working. Not the easiest install but got it to work.

    4>If ON
5>Press the Reset button on printserver for 5 seconds,if you get the test printout-its compatible
    6>If no page
7>Try to open web interface go to status->printer check printer status -if offline-not compatible
8>If online click on "Print Test Page"
    9>If it is coming out-Compatible
    10>If not-Forget it!!!

    Another incompatible printer Lexmark X83

I'm gonna try "generic" driver. Read below..Taken from the web

Chat session with HP tech regarding HP PSE 2355 printer compatability:
    Bill:
I just bought a Linksys wireless-G print server (model WPS54G) and wanted to
confirm that it will enable this printer to be operated wirelessly.
    Rusty:
I am sorry to say that ,psc 2355 is not a fully network supported model, however you can try installing alternate drivers.
Perform the following steps to install the alternate print driver (Deskjet 550C)for the all-in-one:
    1. Click Start,Control Panel, and then select Printers and Faxes.
    2. Double-click the Add Printer icon. Click Next.
    3. If it asks Local or Network, choose Local, then click Next.
    4. In the Manufacturers list, choose HP.
    5. In the Printer list, choose the HP Deskjet 550C printer, then click Next. Provide the Windows CD-ROM or appropriate path when you are prompted for.
    6. Select the port where the HP product is installed (ex: LPT1), then choose Next.
    7. The printer name should be listed as HP Deskjet 550C Printer.
    8. Click No on Do you want your Windows based programs to use this printer as your default printer? Then click Next.
    9. Click No when it asks, Would you like to print a test page (recommended). Then click Finish

    success!

    HP PSC 2110
    USB- Yes
    Parallel - No

had to use the deskjet 990c for a driver though..I wonder if there is a way to use the whole HP utility and including scanning and all that fancy stuff..wish I knew of a way. I guess since I had to install it on a new port (TCP) instead of USB the software won't work.

the WPS54GU2 has a parallel port.

i have had the HP 5510 officejet connected to the print server for well over a year thru USB. have not tested the parallel port. wireless setup to my wrt 54 gs router.

works fine, but every now and then i will get a "print server fail..." message.

This compatibility test didn't work with a Dell photo printer 720.

But we changed the "Printing Processor" in Printer Properties/Advanced.

We tried other than the one proposed by default and it worked...

Hope that this could help someone :)

    WPS54G + Canon I960 works.

Canon's maintenance utility does not seem to like it though. Get time out trying to see if ink cartridges are running out. But prints like no problem. Upgraded to new 6047 firmware, no change with program. Can see option now for WPA but not currently using that part. Just wanted USB 2.0 support.

  36. Just spoke with Linksys (about WPS54GU2)

I was on hold for about 40 mins, not too bad. Anyways, I have an HP Photosmart 8250, which they told me was not in their database because it is so new. They did, however, tell me that these models are tested and ARE compatible:

    HP Photosmart 7150
    HP Photosmart 7550

I'm gonna go ahead and order a WPS54GU2 from newegg and I'll post back here with the result.

After much arguing with it, I've now got the HP OfficeJet 6110 working using the WPS54G.

In Linksys' defence the problem is HP software trying to be too clever. It seems the "monitor tools" decide to actually remove the printer from the list of available printers when it's disconnected. To work around this, install the printer, remove the monitor tools from the Startup folder, reboot and carry on with the WPS54G install from there.
