Options RT-N66U firmware besides TomatoUSB

I have been running TomatoUSB for a few years without issues but am wondering what other firmware options are for this device. One thing that bothers me a little bit is the fact that TomatoUSB is bound to the linux kernel version 2.6.22.19 due to broadcom's binary blob drivers.

    My requirements:
*Linux ssh interface with entware (or whatever the linux utils ported are called).
*Mature status such that I do not experience instabilities for just day-to-day wifi routing.

    Thanks for the suggestions!

I like Shibby Tomato USB on the RT-N66U but you have options. The stock firmware is very good. It is based on Tomato. There is a modified stock FW called Merlin that is good. I got DD-WRT to work but did not see any reason to use it over the other. Search for my Youtube videos for full installation instructions. The great thing is you can backup your present configuration and experiment and then go back. The Asus recovery mode makes it nearly impossible to brick your router.

i can confirm, Tomato or Mrelin...both stable and full of features.

I run asus-merlin on my RT-N66U presently and Shibby Tomato on a W1801r. Even as a long-time tomato user I have to admit that the asus gui and the layout of options is growing on me.

But don't expect the reported kernel version to change - its frozen to work with the Broadcom binary drivers, but there have been backports of fixes

    Code:
    ASUSWRT-Merlin RT-N66U_3.0.0.4 Fri Jul 17 03:15:20 UTC 2015
    admin@RT-N66U:/tmp/home/root# uname -a
    Linux RT-N66U 2.6.22.19 #1 Thu Jul 16 23:16:01 EDT 2015 mips GNU/Linux
