P2P download kills my BEFCMU10 cablemodem

When downloading torrents with Azureus my Linksys BEFCMU10 cablemodem will "die" if the download speed goes above about 400kB/s for a few minutes. Unplugging the power to the modem and plugging it back in fixes it for a while and the torrent picks up and continues.
    I have a WRT54G v1.0 with tofu13c behind the modem.
I can seed torrents all day with no problems. It only happens when downloading.

I'm wondering if there is something I can do to prevent the modem from "dieing".
Maybe a setting in Azureus to restrict the nuimber of connections. Or is my ISP (Comcast) somehow "killing" the modem when it detects the traffic.

It's an older modem (a few years old).

I'll be buying a new WRTSL54GS router soon. Do you think it's worth replacing the modem too? Is the Motorola Surfboard a better modem?

    Thanks for your help,
