I have the WMP55AG wireless adapter for my desktop computer and it has a very small antenna. The signal strength varies all over the map from very good to low and I get dropouts.

I have a WRT54G wireless router and I upgraded the antennas to 5db rubber ducks. This didn't really seem to help much.

I have a laptop that gets excellent reception anywhere in the house, so the router signal seems good.

This WMP55AG adapter doesn't have a removable antenna, so I am thinking about getting a different adapter.

Which linksys PCI, wireless adapters have removable antennas? I would like to purchase a different one, but I want to insure I can upgrade the antenna if necessary.

that 5 dbi antenna you got is only 1db higher than the stock antennas the even the 7dbi antennas won't give you that great of an improvement, best shot is a high gain directional if you want to fix it with antennas.
now there was someone posting earlier saying he had his system overclocked and when he set it back to the proper clcok rate the wireless signal strength was way better (not sure why but wanted to mention it)
other things to concider: does the laptop work if you put it in the same position as the desktop PC? have you tied turning the PC to face a different direction?
whats between the PC and the router? (walls, electrical room, etc)

i think that the dlink adapters will do the trick. i have not had any problems with them. i have 3 of them. the dwl-g120 is the best. with usb you could reposition it

I think you can consider to get d-link external antenna (ANT24-0400 2.4GHz Omni-Directional ) connect to your pci wireless adapter. This 4dBi antenna also improves signal quality, reducing dead spots in your wireless coverage.
