Peculiar Wireless Behavior

    Hi everyone,

I'm seeing some odd behavior with my wireless connections, hoping someone can provide some ideas on how to address.

I have a WRT54GL running Tomato 1.25. I have at least 5 devices hardwired to the router throughout the house, and all these devices appear to be working correctly.

However on any laptop that connects wirelessly I'm getting pauses in the connection. For example, my wife will be using Yahoo to read her email and every minute or two the delay for a page refresh is quite long, and I dont experience the same delays on any of my hardwired PCs.

I setup a ping from the laptop to over the wireless connection and let it run for two minutes. The results show anywhere from 4% to 6% packet loss. Every 10 to 20 pings I get a 'request timed out', and all other pings are quite fast. This behavior does not exist with my wired PCs - running pings for 2-5 minutes show zero loss. This loss behavior exists on a Windows XP laptop and a Vista laptop.

Here are the key router settings:
    • Wireless Mode: Access Point
    • B/G Mode: Mixed
    • Channel: 1 - 2.412 Ghz (Tried 1, 6, 11, all same behavior)
    • SSID: not linksys, broadcasting
    • Security: WPA/WPA2
Anyone have any ideas? I tried ramping down the security and that didnt change the behavior. What else should I try?

Running the latest drivers? Have you tried just G mode? Or do you need B as well? SSID are you showing it or hiding it? It is best to show it.

Yes, latest drivers on the client laptops - both are the HP provided drivers and are more than six months old. The behavior is about six weeks old.

Im running mixed mode, I'll try switching to just G, I dont think I have any B devices anymore. And Im showing the SSID for sure.

Could be any number of things. First and foremost you have to determine if its on the computer or router end. Try another wireless client, if it does or does not experience the same behavior, you have a direction to go.

    1) Are you running standard Tomato or ND? With a GL, I'd be using the ND build.

    2) What is the physical distance between the laptop and router? If they are close (like line of sight and 6 feet apart) and still have an issue, then there is something going on. If they are 'far apart', maybe you just have a very weak signal to/from the router. Check the RSSI signal strength on the tomato connected clients page.

Also check that the microwave oven is not being used. :)

Also check your cordless phone if you have one. My old 2.4 GHz phone completely swamped my wireless connection. It was bad enough I switched to a 1.9 GHz phone.

An update...the behavior continues on multiple laptops. Here are the things I have done:
    - Switched the router to G mode only
    - Updated transmit x to 70
    - Moved to 5 ft from router, timeouts still occur

Im sitting here looking at my laptop with netstumbler running now and the signal is a constant -50db and yet the pings are still timing out. My home phones are panasonic gigaranges, they operate in the 5.8Ghz zone, so I think Im ok. And no the microwave isnt on. :)

I havent tried the ND build yet, I will give that a try later this week. Thanks to everyone for their thoughts!

The only thing I can think of, is there might be something not in your home causing interference. Check for possible causes near your home/apartment.
