Phoenix Firmware for AG241 V1 ( EU AnnexA / DE AnnexB ) AG241 V2 ( EU AnnexA / DE AnnexB ) AG241 (AU AnnexA) The AG241 is a very good piece of kit, unfortunately it comes with a firmware that is failing in many areas. Bored Individual started modifying the firmware on his Australian AG241 and was requested via the Whirlpool forums to compile the latest source for the EU version, This then became extended to to include telnet and new ADSL modes plus the fix to display them correctly on the status page. Next came the Dnsmasq stability fix (This rectifies the device stops resolving hostnames and handing out IP addresses) ,also the rc/network and pppd stability fix (This rectifies the device locks up while establishing PPPoA connection) both of these by TSM. Lastly we have the single port forward options edited to add the 'Both' option to protocols available, The DE version of the firmware has also been updated from V2.01.01 to V2.01.03 and had all the fixes Integrated. Phoenix is Born, Starting with the base firmware of 2.01.03 Bored Individual and myself (Amiga) have worked on fixing updating and adding to the firmware at times we`ve been working into the small hours scratching our heads at what linksys had done. we have decided that it is now ready for release, so say hello to Phoenix. Good news for AG241 users! Interesting how a couple of years ago I couldn't find any third party adsl router firmware, now we have (in order I've noticed them) Routertech, Woytekm, Pluto (+Skidoo), Neptune354, Fritz!box as well as Phoenix etc and there is now activity again in OpenWrt. What do they have in common? The Ti (now Infineon) AR7 DSL/CPU chipset and the GPL opensource Linux releases from Linksys, Netgear, D-Link etc and especially thanks to Acorp!
This is great! I've waited so long for this fixed firmware.. And now it's here.. Thank you very much. You are the best. Ok, I have few things to report after some testing.. 1. UPnP: I can still see and delete (!) manually assigned port forwards through Windows XP UPnP management. Everyone can do this without any authentication, so I consider this a big security issue with UPnP. Also, when I enabled and played with UPnP for some time, it messed up my 'BOTH' type port forwards. 2. NTP: For some reason, I always get "Current Time: Not Available" on status page regardless of what I have on setup page. I tried to change time zone, manually set up servers, check/uncheck "adjust clock for daylight saving changes" option and rebooted router many times, still the same result. It didn't work with official 2.01.03 version either. But when I logged via telnet and ran ntpd, time was synchronized, thoght, ntpd reported some errors. 3. It's about 7.01.04 change: "Realm Patch (Adds device name to login prompt)". I see "(none) login:" prompt, not a big problem, but something is wrong somewhere.. I just noticed, Dataflow always show "Rx: 0 b Tx: 0 b", which is not correct. But I guess it is because I disabled firewall in security options.
Hi Burning Shadow 7.1.04 was a major change from the linksys plain source, Upnp is a binary only file there is no compile source for it in the gpl source code. ok the problems at hand.. 1,2,3,4 these are from what i remember symptons of a flash not resetting some options in the 2.01.03 or earlier firmwares on upgrade. also Due to the Upnp being only binary an d how it was changed it will require that the firmware is upgraded on a factory default set ag241. (Upnp and manual forwards are nolonger stored in same table) step 1 flash ag241 back to 2.01.03 step 2 do a restore to factory defaults step 3 reflash with Phoenix 7.01.04 step 4 do a reset to factory defaults step 5 set up ag241 as required if your in the uk to good ntp servers are: ntp2d.mcc.ac.uk ntp.cis.strath.ac.uk once done regards Amiga
Ok, I went through all steps, but none of the issues were fixed unfortunately. I created a step-by-step UPnP hack guide, look at screenshots: http://musicstation.spb.ru/tmp/upnp-01.png http://musicstation.spb.ru/tmp/upnp-02.png http://musicstation.spb.ru/tmp/upnp-03.png http://musicstation.spb.ru/tmp/upnp-04.png http://musicstation.spb.ru/tmp/upnp-05.png If it is not possible to fix UPnP, I'd suggest to disable it by default.. Also, I still see "(none) login:" login prompt, time still shows as "Not Available" and Dataflow shows zeroes.. Could it be that I do something wrong? I really did all the steps you provided...
you may want to confirm your upnp is running correctly here: http://fp.mgillespie.plus.com/upnphelp.htm however with the amount of upnp hacks now out on the net upnp is very unsecure. http://www.gnucitizen.org/blog/flash-upnp-attack-faq http://www.upnp-hacks.org/ There are far more vunerabilities out there for upnp. tbh i have mine turned off by default.
Well, my upnp is running as it was running with all previous firmware versions, I even sent a bug report to Linksys support, but they did not manage to fix this, saying "this router model is not popular so don't expect any firmware updates". Anyway, the problem is not how correctly it is running. Problem is that anyone on the net can delete or change my manually assigned port forwards using upnp interface. This is a really big security hole and the main reason I don't use upnp with AG241.
ok it sounds like your ag241 has got itself in a rut one of mine did the same on the upgarde between official firmwares but there is a solution Resetting the AG241 1. While the router is powered on, press the reset button located at the back panel of the device for 30-60 seconds long. 2. Release the button and shut down the device for 1 minute. 3. power on device, flash firmware do not do a restore of old settings from file as i fell prey to this - it actually puts back more than your settings and you land back up in the same boat. as to upnp mine is turned off by default, by having it on you effectively give any device the right to add or delete rules as it so pleases. UPnP: I can still see and delete (!) manually assigned port forwards through Windows XP UPnP management - this maybe fixable , i`ll have a chat with Bored Individual as to what can be done. oh and ntp can take a little while to kick in 30 sec to a minute sometimes slighty longer. but normally 5 secs or so here (i think its more isp related.
I shouldn't flash prevoius version before doing these steps, right? I never did that. Of course, it's how upnp is designed. Any device should be able to add, modify and delete rules. But only those rules, that were created via upnp interface. In my case, rules created by me via web interface can be modified/deleted via upnp, which is not good at all. Ok, I'll try to go through above steps to reset router and hope it will work now.
We created seperate tables for the upnp and manual port forwards (but originally they were one) so we might of missed something.
Ok, I went through all the steps and still it didn't solve any issues. I still see manual portmappings via upnp interface, time still not available, dataflow shows zeroes and login prompt didn't change either...
yes, i enabled upnp and was able to do the same as you. I`ve asked BI to have a look but its currently 5am where he is at the moment.
I tried to flash 2.01.03, then reset using button, then flash 7.01.03, reset using button again, then configure. Same issues, even telnet prompt didn't change.
ok telnet will say (none) login: the realm was changed so that it displayed (The server 192.168.1.1 at AG241V2 requires a username and password.) in the window that appears in the web browser instead of (The server 192.168.1.1 at NONE requires a username and password.). ok, do you get ntp time in the 2.01.03 firmware on the status page ? also how are you connected pppoa etc. 1 last thing to try ok flash to 2.01.03, then reset to factory defaults, switch off , unplug all network cables from it, remove power plug then hold reset button for 1 minute, reconnect power and network cables hold reset switch switch on and keep holding for 1 minute release wait untill it boots, put in your log in details and connect to web, does it find time server. (if it does restore to factory defaults and flash 7.01.04, then restore factory defaults wait till it reboots then re enter login details does it still see time server. where are you located ? try setting time zone to 0.00 gmt london
you can always try flashing by tftp get the linksys utility here www.hacknpatch.co.uk/download/tftp.zip rename firmware v 2.01.03 to upgrade_code.bin run tftp.exe put in router address, password and location of upgrade_code.bin switch of ag241, then switch on ag241 and within 3 seconds press upgrade in tftp, could take a few trys to get the timing right. you should see it erase flash then upload file once done give it a minute or so to reboot.
I see now. Nope. But it's something that didn't work in original firmware either. Well, it showed correct date once, but after reboot it gone again. Fixed IP. (RFC 1483 Routed LLC) I will try it tomorrow.. My homemates are already mad at me for breaking internet for so long time... I tried different time zones. Doesn't help. Looks like ntpd tries to connect to time server when there is no connection establised yet, fails, and never tries to connect again. I was able to sync time when manually launched ntpd from telnet session. It showed some errors about not being able to access some file in /tmp, but updated time. Also, there is no ntpd process in process list, looks like it just not started or crashed on startup. I'd like to debug it, but don't know how, not very familiar with linux..
Ok, I will try it later too. Though, I believe, firmware is flashed ok, it's just something about my specific configuration that breaks ntpd somehow...
ok, i will check with BI as to whether or not the connection type is the culprit here, there maybe a setting that was not set in original firmware that we can re-enable ie wait until ppp up then get ntp time (if you get my drift), also we`ll look into why no dataflow could be connection type again. let me know how it goes tomorrow with tftp flashing and we`ll get back to you asap with an answer as to why and whether or not we can impliment a fix.
Burning Shadow, Please see beta thread for new beta that should fix UPnP issue. also on the time not displaying, can you do a reboot and then post the log output from cold start to connected it just might give a hint as to what is happening for it to fail. Amiga
Ok, I tested new beta. UPnP port forwards now really separated from manual forwards. But I still can remap any port using UPnP. For example, I have manually set up forwarding of 80 port to a local web server. Using UPnP I can map 80 port to different PC and this will even have higher priority, which means my web server will not receive requests. Ideally, UPnP should deny requests for mapping already mapped ports in either single port forwards or port range forwards. If this is not possible because of there is no source code of UPnP module, it at least must have lower priority than manually assigned port forwards.
One more thing about beta. Factory Defaults does not work with it. After using, router just stops responding. Though, after switching power, it boots up with defaults loaded.
This is log from stable version. I'll post log from beta fw in a few minutes. burning shadow, with the total hang are you able to replicate it time after time or was it just the once ? BI is really the brains behind the firmware, i've done some modding and the web interface but am limited on what i myself can achieve. i'm sure there is a way to either get upnp to check the forward tables first before adding or as you say set to a lower priority.
I'm sorry, but I didn't understand the question.. If you are talking about port remapping via UPnP, then yes, this is 100% reproducable. It can be done using the same Windows XP UPnP interface (like on screenshots in one of my previous posts). Do you mean I should contact him directly? Well, priority hack is something that should be implemented only if there is absolutely no other way to fix it..
Oh, I got it. It hanged 3 times. First time I used factory defaults, power led became permanently red. Next 2 times I used factory defaults, router just stopped responding.
Due to bugs creeping in we are now looking for people to be official beta testers to allow us to fully test where possible all functions: if you would like to be a beta tester, you will need to meet the following conditions: 1. own/use a Linksys AG241 V1,V2 2. be prepared to flash beta firmwares for testing functionality, or specific features 3. be prepared to provide feedback on bugs found and relevant logs 4. prepared to provide info on your setup (so we may ask you to test a certain feature based on it) 5. Thanks burning shadow, your added to the list. we`ve reverted back to the Phoenix 7.01.03 base code as netfilter update broke vpn which in turn caused something to play havoc with the connection etc. so we are working towards a 7.01.04 rewrite + additions for 7.01.05. watch this space i`m sure your services will be called on shortly.

Ciao ... username: alevia device: AG241 EU device version: v2 connection type: 2516 PPPoE (Alice = Telecom Italia) multiplexing: LLC Annex type: A I have a problem: sometimes the ruoter disconnects from the provider and the only way to reconnect my AG241 is turn off and turn on the power. The problem happens one time every one day/two days. I have tried the original firmware AG241V2-EU-AnnexA-v2.01.03 and the 7.01.04-Phoenix with the same result. I use Phoenix Firmware only by a week. With a different ruoter (a Digicom - Michelangelo Office - year 2002) the disconnection happens in the same manner but there is a reconnection always: the only problem with Digicom Router is that sometime I lose UDP packets. Ready to test alpha firmware. Thank you. Sorry for my poor English language A clarification: the router AG241 reconnects sometimes and sometimes not reconnects and I have to try a reboot. When the router reconnect there is a double copy of "pppd plugin pppoe user XXX ..." process looking the ps command via telnet. I try using the telnet if I understand more about my problem. Hi, Everyone The project isn`t dead, unfortunatley my back took longer to heal than expected and then when i tryed to get back online i found out that my isp had f@#*ed up my account on their systems. to cut a long story short at this moment in time i have a business internet and email account that i access using a residential username and password well from 1pm today up untill then i have had no access. the upshot of all this is that it looks like they will have to clean both accounts from their system and create me a new one. i`ll find out how long that will take tomorrow but most likely i will lose internet access for a few days 7-14 at worst As soon as this is completed i will be back with a vengence tto get some of the bugs squashed so future betatesters and everyone else please hang in there for a bit longer.
ag241v2 dhcp_reserved bug original and alternative firmware has error - line 210 (this char -> "`" ) in dhcp_reserved.asp
Hello everyone. Is there any way to enable multi-pvc on this device with port assign. Port 1/3->Internet Port 4->IPTV
sorry to sound stupid but is the would this firmware work on a AG241V2-UK edit: decided to give it a try regardless, and it works
Dudes. What should I put in "Internet IP address" field? As I´m switching to routing mode. http://www.aijaa.com/v.php?i=3863915.jpg Firmware is not accepting zeros in that field.
Hello everybody! I got a new WRT54G linksys router. Entering its config it reads "Firmware Version:v7.00.1, May. 4, 2006" Is there a way to get it work as Universal Repeater? If yes, help me please doing it.
does anyone know please where you can still download the Phoenix firmware? going to the original page at http://www.hacknpatch.co.uk just gives you a freeola error page. I'm interested in finding the latest release for an AG241v2 EU/UK
You could ask the expert author/compiler "Bored Individual" on Aus whirlpool forums, if no joy with amiga. I have only V1 hardware, and V1 phoenix firmwares only I'm afraid.
Thanks mstombs, i will try and get in touch with them. I'm just hoping to enable telnet access and SNR tweaking (with DMT tool) to try and get my speed back up again after some previous line issues.
Mstombs, I have a few AG241 V1 routers that i would like to use on an ADSL2+ Annex m line, i might be wrong but i believe EU version 1.01.07 would sort this out for me, but so far i can only find the AU version of this, and i feel like i've looked everywhere. Do you know where i might find suitable firmware? I would be tremendously gratefull if you can help. Thanks
www.hacknpatch.co.uk -- Status: active Hi, My Isp had changed over their servers and in the process files got lost and site went down, unfortunately i didn`t get email to notify me so didn`t know until the other day. i have reloaded all the back up files on to new server and site is now active again. regards Amiga
