I just now signed up for this forum because I need help with my router. I have tried for 5 days to get it working correctly and nothing I have tried helps. It is a WRT54GS.I live in a condo and there is lots of interference from other networks but they are for the most part secured. I ran mine for the longest time unsecured, and then one day a friend secured it for me... but then the power went out one day shortly after and the problems started. I only have one laptop connected wirelessly WEP. But it keeps dropping off intermittently and then it is unable to reconnect automatically or manually.Sometimes I can get it to connect but it drops off again within 10 minutes or so. I need to know the proper way to set it up so it stays connected or at least accepts the password every time. Do I need to configure static IPs? How do I set up the Linksys settings page so it doesnt keep dropping off?? I cant find my original manual or install CD.

BTW my unit is only about 1000 sq ft and I have the same problem with the laptop right next to my router. signal strength shows max on the laptop, but it is unable to connect.

what version of WRT54GS do you have?

try looking at the Wireless Tweaking Guide in the Articles section

In addition, you can try logon to your router at its default address Default password is admin (leave username blank). You should try to do this using a LAN cable for stability.

Was the power outage isolated to your condo? Does the problem disappear if you turn off wireless security? Also try switching to another channel on the router and see if the problem is caused by interference.

yes, logging on to the router page was the first thing I did, and it is configured for WEP 128 bit encryption. I already tried 6 different channels. I even went back to default settings (no security) and it was able to connect but then it dropped off every few minutes. So I have since went back to encryption to try and set up the network properly.
I have the router wired directly to my desktop PC and the printer with no problems there.
The problem is just the wireless connection from the the laptop to the router and printer.

I am thinking maybe it has something to do with having a dynamic IP adress, but I dont know how to change that. could somebody tell me if I am missing something on the setup page? What do I need to put in the DHCP settings in the DNS fields? How do I set up the laptop to REMEMBER the WEP key password for the router? I always type in the password on network connections but then it defaults back to some other value the next time I try to connect.

How do I set up the router to always recognize the laptop and give it permission to access the network?

... or maybe the router is just fried.

also I am pretty sure I have the initial release version or whatever they sold in 2003-2004. I have had it for a very long time without a problem until late this year. How can I upgrade the firmware? Should I do a 3rd party upgrade? Where can I download these?

ok guys thanks a lot for the help...

I think I figured it out. There was something wrong with the mac address so it was only leasing limited access to the laptop. It has been on strong for a full day now since I reentered all the mac addresseson both PCs from start>run>cmd ipconfig /all.
