Hello everybody. I am new here as well as new to wireless stuff. I've got myself 2 WRT54GL with the purpose to create connection between my PC and media player. I've read WDS mode is good for that.
I have flashed both routers with the latest Tomato. I pretty much followed this guide http://www.polarcloud.com/tomatofaq#how_do_i_use_wds , except I set up second router to WDS only and I didn't bother with encryption for now.
I didn't have much time yesterday to play with it.
Pardon my stupidity, but I have couple questions:

    1. How do I know if this setup is working? Is there a page that displays correct setup of WDS? Do I need to hook my media player to 2nd router?
I tried to ping IP of the 2nd router, but I didn't get any response.

    2. MAC address... Is this the one printed on the bottom of the router? I have read somewhere it is not always the case. I used the one that printed on the box.

    Please help.

    1. You should be able to ping the IP of each other router. The other router should appear as wds0.1 in "Status/Device list".
    2. Use the Wireless MAC shown in "Status/Overview"

    Use "WDS + AP"-Mode.

Encryption: WPA/AES using same SSID works fine for me, linking 7 APs.

    oh thats' why!
So I put wireless MAC shown of the router #1 into router #2 and wireless MAC of #2 into #1, right?
Too bad I am at work now.
    Any other tips? Thanks.

Right! Should work in the shown way.

Switch from "lazy WDS" -> "Link with:"

    Oops, hit "submit" too soon.

You really should be looking at Basic > Network > Wireless. Each one lists the MAC address that you should list in the WDS section of the other.

    They should be the same.

My second note was just to point out that the Tomato UI conveniently duplicates the information somewhere where it is extremely useful

Repeater Bridge will put hosts on a different subnet than the main AP.

Maybe you're thinking of Repeater? Or Repeater + Virtual AP? In either case, WDS, when possible, should be a better solution than Repeater.

Update. I've got it working yesterday! Thanks guys! Appreciate your help!
    More q's though
I see bars icon and number accross WDS conncection (in device list), its about 30+ and 3 bars. What does number represent? %, Kb/s?
Routers located on different floors, going through several walls. Is that normal/typical numbers I'm getting?
Should I increase transmit power? I left it in default.
