    OK, here's the situation:

I have a WRT54G v3 in my landlord's apt on the north side of the building serving up internet.
I have a WUSB54GS plugged into my computer in the middle of the building listening to it.
I have a friend at the south side of the building who wants to logon.

I can barely get a connection in my apt: the WUSB54GS typically associates but can't get a DHCP lease (even tho the network appears in the network survey as 45%-55% quality, go figure)

My freind can't get any signal.

    So here's my idea:

Get another WRT and put it in my room, use it as an adapter (plug into it via ethernet) and also have it _rebroadcast_ the signal to the south side of the building. I don't care if the throughput is cut in half, it's only serving internet anyway.

I figure the WRT would have no problem getting the signal even tho the WUSB can't really do it. Agree? Disagree?

I would probably want to tap into the WRT via ethernet and return the WUSB54GS. Maybe keep the WUSB and get my internet wirelessly tho.
Are both options possible while the WRT is rebroadcasting?

    Problems:

This city has no WRT54G v4s left. Only crap V5s. Can I use a WRT54GS to rebroadcast the signal from a WRT54G? I can't run tofu on a GS and I can't run thibor on a G. Will they interact properly?

Is it WET I want, or WDS or what?

    Thanks,

    agraham

Enable the WDS on your WRT54G?S router.

WDS would need to be anebled on BOTH routers, and some other configuring doing too. Yo also need to have WDS-capable firmware on the routers (e.g. DD-WRT v23 25/12/05).

With DD-WRT you can also tweak the xmit power on the routers...

    OK, I got a WRT54G v.4.
For those in Vancouver, London Drugs has more v.4s in.

I'll try to set up the WDS tonight.

I just hope I can tap into the WRT via ethernet when it's in WDS mode tho. We'll soon know.

There is a WDS walk-through on this site...

Do SSIDs have to be the same? I tried having different ones and they seem to be able to connect to eachother but I am unable to connect to the internet is they are running different SSIDs.

SSID **and** channel ABSOLUTELY must be the same.
