PPPoE authentication fail

Since Friday my Linksys (WAG54G) ADSL Gateway keeps dropping the connection, when I attempt to reconnect i get "PPPoE authentication fail". This was working fine a number of months. Why is this occurring now? What can I do to resolve it? When originally purchased the firmware version was 1.01.6, I then upgraded to firmware numerous times and am now running version 1.02.9. It's working "for the moment" but I know as soon as I leave it and come back in a couple of minutes the same problem will occur. My ISP is eircom in Ireland.

From looking at a few online forums ( http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=205861 ) the WAG54G seems to be VERY problematic. Has anyone else seen this problem?

    Thanks in advance...

I have seen it on WRT54G too when the ISP's server fails to accept login info provided by the router, either because there was a problem at the ISP end or connection to the phone exchange, or the wrong login was used (wrong ID or password).

When this happens (and I know the line or my ISP is at fault since nothing else was changed), I usually turn off my modem and turn it back on after 10 seconds and let it resynchronize with the exchange and everything is normal again. Don't know if you can do the same on a WAG54G though, but it's worth a try.

Believe it or not ... but if I change the user name and password and attempt to reconnect usually on the 3rd attempt it connects. My ISP gave me a 2nd user name and password to use (both work fine) but I have to change them in order to get the stupid gateway to connect again once it drops the connection.
